Happy 4th of July, everyone! As fireworks light up the night sky and the spirit of independence fills the air, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on a truly wonderful long weekend. It’s a time for celebration, reflection, and, for us, a perfect opportunity to explore the vibrant corners of our beloved city, Richmond, Virginia. This holiday weekend has been a delightful blend of culinary discoveries, local market finds, and a dash of personal wellness, proving that some of the best adventures are found right in your own backyard.

We kicked off the holiday weekend with an exciting exploration of Richmond’s dynamic food scene. Alex and I embarked on what we affectionately called a “culinary crawl” — a relaxed date night adventure through the charming streets of Downtown and the historic allure of Church Hill. Richmond boasts an incredible array of restaurants, each with its own unique charm and offerings. While many establishments are celebrated for their diverse menus, finding extensive vegetarian entree options can sometimes be a delightful challenge. Instead of limiting ourselves to one spot, we embraced the small-plate philosophy, allowing us to sample a wider variety of flavors and atmospheres across several locations. This approach not only made for an incredibly fun evening but also highlighted the versatility and creativity of Richmond’s chefs, even when catering to specific dietary preferences.
A Downtown Delight: Belle & James
Our gastronomic journey began at Belle & James, a relatively new and stylish addition to Downtown Richmond’s burgeoning restaurant landscape. The ambiance was sophisticated yet welcoming, making it an ideal spot to ease into our evening. We started with a celebratory toast: a crisp glass of Prosecco for me, perfectly bubbly and refreshing, while Alex opted for a local craft beer, enjoying the rich notes of Richmond’s brewing culture. To complement our drinks, we shared their delectable goat cheese crostini.

This appetizer was an absolute revelation. Each piece of toasted bread was generously slathered with creamy goat cheese and then crowned with a sweet jam or preserve. The sweetness of the jam created a beautiful counterpoint to the tangy richness of the goat cheese, resulting in a harmonious burst of flavors with every bite. We arrived a bit early in the evening, which meant we were privy to their fantastic array of food and drink specials – a wonderful perk for budget-conscious diners or those looking for a delightful pre-dinner treat! Belle & James truly impressed us as a prime destination for an after-work happy hour or a chic start to a downtown evening, offering both quality and value in a stylish setting.
Church Hill Charm: Dutch & Co.
From Downtown, our culinary compass pointed us towards the picturesque neighborhood of Church Hill, leading us to our next stop: Dutch & Co.. Neither of us had had the pleasure of dining there before, and I was particularly excited to discover that they featured a thoughtful selection of vegetarian small plates, a welcome sight for any plant-based diner. Upon entering, we were immediately captivated by the restaurant’s intimate yet lively atmosphere. It’s one of those special places that exudes warmth and character, making you feel right at home with its cozy charm. After perusing their enticing menu, we decided on the burrata, a choice that proved to be nothing short of inspired.

The burrata arrived as a work of art on a plate. It was meticulously prepared and presented alongside a delightful medley of fresh ricotta, crisp radishes, vibrant sugar snap peas, fragrant mint, and crunchy buckwheat crisps. This dish quickly became the undeniable highlight of our entire date night. The burrata itself boasted an incredibly luxurious and creamy texture that melted in the mouth, perfectly complemented by the refreshing crunch of the seasonal vegetables. I honestly couldn’t get over how incredibly fresh and flavorful each component was; I could have happily devoured a giant bowl of those perfectly seasoned vegetables alone! Beyond the exquisite food, the service at Dutch & Co. was truly exceptional. At one point, a rather audacious fly decided to take an unwelcome dip in my half-full glass of rosé. Without hesitation, our server swiftly appeared, offering a genuine apology and promptly replacing my drink with a brand new, full glass. This level of attentiveness, genuine care, and commitment to guest satisfaction significantly enhanced our experience, solidifying Dutch & Co. as a must-visit in Richmond’s dynamic culinary scene for both its innovative dishes and impeccable hospitality.
A Timeless Spot: The Roosevelt
Our final destination for the evening brought us back to Church Hill, to the esteemed The Roosevelt. My previous visit had been several years ago, so I was keen to revisit this local favorite known for its Southern-inspired cuisine and welcoming ambiance. We were fortunate enough to snag two coveted spots at the bustling bar, where we could soak in the lively atmosphere and observe the skilled bartenders at work. To round off our evening, we decided on a comforting classic – a plate of perfectly crisp french fries, a universally loved treat – alongside an adventurous order of shishito peppers.

Shishito peppers have undoubtedly been having their moment in the culinary spotlight, appearing on menus seemingly everywhere, and for very good reason. Their mild, slightly sweet flavor with that occasional thrilling kick of spiciness makes them incredibly addictive and a fun starter to share. The Roosevelt’s rendition was particularly memorable: beautifully blistered peppers served with a luscious avocado cream, crumbled queso fresco, and what the menu described as pumpkin seeds, though the nutty crumble had a slightly different, perhaps more complex, flavor profile to my palate. Regardless of the exact crumble, the combination was absolutely divine, offering a creamy, salty, and subtly sweet harmony with the tender peppers. If you’ve never experienced the joy of shishito peppers, part of their appeal lies in the playful roulette of flavors – most are delightfully mild, but every so often, you encounter one with a surprising, yet manageable, fiery kick. We only encountered one spicy pepper during our shared plate, and thankfully, it wasn’t overpoweringly hot, adding just the right amount of excitement to our final savory dish and concluding our restaurant hopping adventure on a high note.
As the night wound down, we briefly contemplated indulging in dessert from the renowned WPA Bakery, another Richmond institution celebrated for its delectable pastries and baked goods. Unfortunately, their closing time was fast approaching, so we decided to save that sweet experience for another visit, a perfect excuse to return to this charming neighborhood. Nevertheless, our evening of restaurant hopping was an undeniable success. It was a fantastic way to reconnect with Richmond’s dynamic culinary landscape and discover new favorites. Despite the occasional search for extensive vegetarian entrees, this delicious adventure proved that with a little creativity and a willingness to explore small plates, Richmond’s restaurants offer a plethora of incredible options for everyone, making it a true foodie paradise and a testament to the city’s growing gastronomic prowess.
Embracing Local Flavors: South of the James Farmers Market
Saturday morning dawned bright and beautiful, and we continued our Richmond-centric weekend with a cherished tradition: a visit to the South of the James Farmers Market. This isn’t just a market; it’s a vibrant community hub, a sensory feast, and a testament to Richmond’s thriving local food movement. The air was buzzing with energy, filled with the aroma of freshly baked goods, blooming flowers, and the cheerful chatter of vendors and patrons. Strolling through the rows of colorful stalls, we were surrounded by the bounty of Virginia’s farms and the craftsmanship of local artisans. It’s truly a quintessential Richmond experience, a place where you can directly connect with the farmers and creators who passionately cultivate and craft the region’s finest offerings.

Our market haul was nothing short of delightful. Alex, ever the connoisseur of sweet treats, made a bee-line for Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen, securing one of their legendary donuts – widely regarded as the absolute best in the area, and for good reason! Their melt-in-your-mouth texture and incredible flavors are an indulgence worth savoring. Beyond the donuts, we filled our basket with other treasures: a crusty, artisanal baguette, a fresh log of local goat cheese, and an assortment of vibrant, seasonal vegetables, each promising a taste of summer’s finest. The sheer variety and quality of produce available truly underscore the richness of our local agricultural community, offering everything from heirloom tomatoes to freshly picked berries.

These fresh market finds quickly transformed into our impromptu lunch, enjoyed al fresco under the pleasant summer sky. There’s an unparalleled joy in simply slicing into a perfectly ripe tomato, pairing it with creamy goat cheese on a piece of fresh baguette, and savoring the pure, unadulterated flavors of summer. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes, the simplest meals are the most satisfying, especially when they feature peak-season produce. The natural sweetness, vibrant textures, and nutritional goodness of freshly picked fruits and vegetables are truly unbeatable, making summer produce a true culinary gift that nourishes both body and soul.
Wellness and Warm Weather: A Perfect Combination

Adding to the magic of the weekend, the weather was unexpectedly perfect – a crisp, clear summer day that was ideal for both relaxation and activity. It provided the perfect impetus for me to lace up my running shoes and hit the pavement. While I’m still on my journey to fully “enjoying running” – a sentiment many can likely relate to – I’ve noticed a significant shift. With each mile that becomes a little easier, the experience transforms from a challenge into something genuinely enjoyable. The fresh air, the rhythmic cadence of my steps, and the beautiful Richmond scenery all contribute to a growing appreciation for this form of exercise, not just for its physical benefits but for the mental clarity it provides.
