Tone It Up Week 4 Fueling Success

Richmond, a city not typically known for its heavy snowfall, recently experienced a truly epic winter wonderland as a major snowstorm blanketed the region this past weekend. While many scrambled to local grocery stores for last-minute essentials, I was perfectly prepared thanks to a timely order from Relay Foods prior to the storm hitting. This proactive move meant we were well-stocked with groceries, allowing us to bypass the usual pre-storm frenzy and enjoy the tranquility of our snow-covered home. The sheer volume of snow was a surprising and captivating sight, turning our familiar surroundings into a picturesque, snow-draped landscape. It truly felt like stepping into a different world, far removed from the everyday hustle and bustle.

The view from our porch was nothing short of breathtaking, capturing the serene beauty of the unexpected winter event. Every tree branch was laden with fluffy white snow, and the entire neighborhood was hushed under a thick, glistening blanket. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional distant sound of a snowplow or the gentle whisper of the wind. This rare glimpse into a snow-laden Richmond was a moment to cherish, creating a cozy and reflective atmosphere that encouraged us to slow down and truly appreciate the quiet beauty of nature’s powerful display.

Despite the crisp, cold air outside, Sunday morning dawned with an unexpected craving: a refreshing smoothie. There’s something wonderfully paradoxical about desiring an icy treat when the world outside is frozen, but this particular morning, a vibrant, frosty blend was exactly what my body yearned for. I kicked off the day with a delightful Blueberry Cheesecake Smoothie Bowl. This wasn’t just any smoothie; it was a luxurious, comforting experience, especially when paired with a steaming cup of coffee. I wrapped myself snugly in a thick blanket, savoring each spoonful of the creamy, berry-infused goodness. It was the perfect contrast to the wintry weather outside, providing a burst of refreshing flavor while I remained ensconced in warmth and comfort, slowly waking up to the peaceful beauty of a snow-covered Sunday.

Transforming Our Space: A Weekend of Home Renovation and Creative Projects

The snowstorm, while beautiful, also meant spending a significant amount of time indoors. We decided to make the most of this captive audience scenario by tackling a long-overdue home renovation project: painting! The weekend quickly transformed into a flurry of brushstrokes and paint rollers, as we meticulously worked our way through refreshing several areas of our home. Our primary focus was the guest bedroom, which received a complete color overhaul, giving it a fresh, inviting new look. Beyond the walls, we also extended our creative efforts to the hallway, brightening up the main thoroughfare of our home. To truly complete the guest bedroom’s transformation, we even took on the ambitious task of repainting some of the furniture, ensuring every detail contributed to the room’s cohesive and updated aesthetic. It was physically demanding work, but incredibly rewarding to see our vision slowly come to life with each coat of paint.

The chosen color for the guest bedroom walls is Sherwin Williams’ “Watery,” a shade that, in certain lighting, appears more blue in photographs but is distinctly a beautiful blue-green in person. It’s a vibrant, soothing hue that truly evokes a sense of calm and freshness. While it turned out a bit brighter than I initially anticipated, I’m absolutely delighted with the outcome. The color adds a refreshing pop to the room, creating an atmosphere that is both serene and cheerful. It’s a testament to how paint can entirely alter the mood and perception of a space, making it feel brand new and invigorated. This vibrant blue-green perfectly complements the natural light, turning the guest room into a peaceful retreat. The entire painting endeavor, from preparation to the final touches, left us feeling accomplished and incredibly hungry.

Fueling Our Creativity: Delicious and Easy Pantry Meals

All that painting certainly worked up quite an appetite! As lunch approached, I knew we needed something hearty and satisfying, yet easy to prepare with minimal fuss. Our grocery run had been strategically bypassed thanks to Relay Foods, but a few days in, our fresh produce supply was naturally dwindling. This made the perfect excuse to whip up a batch of my go-to Mexican Quinoa Bake. This recipe has become a true lifesaver in our household, especially during unexpected snow days or weeks when a trip to the store isn’t feasible. Its genius lies in its reliance on pantry staples – ingredients you almost always have on hand, like quinoa, canned beans, diced tomatoes, and a medley of spices. We’ve actually enjoyed this flavorful and wholesome dish a couple of times this past week alone, a testament to its convenience and deliciousness. It’s the ultimate comfort food that tastes incredible and fuels you without requiring a lengthy grocery list.

Embracing the Indoors: Cozy Activities and Snowy Adventures

Spending so much time indoors, though necessary given the snowstorm, felt a bit unusual at first. However, we quickly adapted and embraced the opportunity to reconnect and enjoy some quality time together. Alex and I dove into a variety of cozy indoor activities. Board games became a favorite pastime, challenging our strategic thinking and sparking plenty of laughter. We also indulged in a substantial amount of Netflix binging, discovering new shows and getting lost in captivating stories, perfect for long, snowy afternoons. One of the most cherished moments was when we decided to make some music together. Alex played the piano, and I joined in, creating a harmonious backdrop to our snow-bound weekend. These simple pleasures transformed what could have been a monotonous indoor stretch into a truly enjoyable and memorable experience, strengthening our bond and reminding us of the joy in shared hobbies. The gentle notes of the piano filled the house, adding another layer of warmth to our cozy retreat.

As the late afternoon rolled around, specifically around 5:30 PM, the novelty of being snowed in began to wear off just a tad. We started feeling a little “stir crazy,” a common side effect of prolonged indoor confinement, even in the coziest of settings. The urge to venture out, even for a brief escape, became undeniable. We decided to brave the snowy conditions and embark on a short adventure to Carytown, one of Richmond’s charming and vibrant districts. Navigating the snow-laden streets was an experience in itself, requiring us to climb over snow piles and tread carefully through slippery patches, but the excitement of an outing spurred us on.

Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find a handful of restaurants open, and each one was absolutely packed with people! It was clear we weren’t the only ones who had succumbed to the call of cabin fever and decided to venture out. The bustling atmosphere was a welcome change, a vibrant contrast to the quiet solitude of our neighborhood. We eventually settled on New York Deli, a local favorite known for its casual charm. I opted for a delicious Greek salad wrap, which was fresh and satisfying, but the true star of the meal, in my humble opinion, was the side of french fries. I’ll admit, those fries were definitely not “Tone It Up approved” – a slight departure from my usual healthy eating habits – but they were so incredibly worth it! Each crispy, golden bite was pure indulgence, and I genuinely believe New York Deli might just serve up some of the best french fries I’ve ever tasted. It was a perfect, comforting end to a day of indoor activities, a little splurge that made the snowy trek entirely worthwhile.

We managed to secure a window seat at New York Deli, which offered a delightful vantage point for people-watching. It was quite entertaining to observe others navigating the snowy sidewalks, wrapped in winter gear, a shared sense of adventure evident among everyone who had dared to venture out. The warmth of the restaurant, combined with the sight of the snowy world outside, created a cozy, almost cinematic experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our brief escape, relishing the chance to get out of the house, soak in some external energy, and appreciate the unique charm of Carytown in winter. It was a perfect way to break up the long weekend and add a touch of external stimulation to our otherwise snow-bound schedule.

Despite the delicious, albeit “unapproved,” dinner indulgence, I’m still diligently trying to follow the Tone It Up meal plan. It’s all about balance, after all, and sometimes a truly exceptional plate of fries is a worthwhile exception!
