It’s an exciting time, as a new Tone It Up challenge has officially kicked off this week! After a brief hiatus from sharing my daily eating habits, I felt this was the perfect opportunity to dive back in and share a full day of my nourishing meals and invigorating activities. For those unfamiliar with Tone It Up, it’s more than just a fitness program; it’s a vibrant online community dedicated to empowering women on their health and wellness journeys. I’ve shared my experiences with Tone It Up extensively in the past, particularly my deeper immersion into the program, which you can read about in this detailed recap of the 7-Day Slim Down. This incredible platform offers an abundance of free workout videos, creative recipe ideas, and, most importantly, a supportive network of women that provides the perfect motivation to reignite my fitness routine and embrace healthier habits.
Embracing the Tone It Up Lifestyle: My Journey Back to Wellness
The core philosophy behind Tone It Up revolves around building a balanced and sustainable healthy lifestyle. While the program does come with a comprehensive meal plan that outlines specific recipes for each day, I often find myself adapting these guidelines to fit my personal schedule, preferences, and the ingredients I have readily available. My general principle remains consistent: focusing on eating “lean, clean, and green.” This means prioritizing lean proteins, whole and unprocessed foods, and an abundance of fresh vegetables. Occasionally, I’ll whip up one of their fantastic recipes, but more often than not, I craft my meals around these foundational principles. This flexibility ensures that healthy eating never feels restrictive or overwhelming, making it a sustainable practice rather than a temporary diet. So, let me walk you through a typical Sunday, showcasing exactly what my meals and activities looked like as I embarked on this new challenge.
Morning Fuel: A Power-Packed Smoothie Bowl to Kickstart the Day
My day began with one of my all-time favorite breakfasts: a vibrant and nutrient-dense smoothie bowl. This particular creation was a delicious blend of frozen mango, frozen pineapple, creamy almond milk, and a half scoop of my preferred protein powder to keep me feeling full and satisfied. What truly elevates a smoothie bowl, however, are the toppings! I loaded mine with an assortment of seeds, granola, and fresh fruit, transforming a simple smoothie into a satisfying and texturally rich meal. Smoothie bowls are incredibly versatile and a fantastic way to pack essential vitamins and minerals into your morning routine. If you’re searching for some creative and healthy smoothie bowl topping ideas, be sure to check out this post I shared recently – it’s packed with inspiration!

Usually, a mid-morning snack would be part of my routine, but this Sunday was exceptionally packed, leaving no window for a dedicated snack break. Instead, I capitalized on a brief moment of clear weather, joining my friend Carin for a brisk walk. It was a lovely, albeit short, opportunity to get some steps in and enjoy the fresh air before the rain inevitably returned. Incorporating these small bursts of activity throughout the day is a fantastic way to boost overall energy and contribute to daily step goals.
An Active Morning: From Rainy Walks to Challenging Yoga Sessions
As soon as I returned home from our walk, I quickly changed into my yoga gear, eager for the next part of my active morning. My husband, Alex, and I then headed to The Yoga Dojo for a 75-minute Rocket Vinyasa class. Rocket Vinyasa is an incredibly dynamic and challenging form of yoga, often described as “the ultimate yoga workout.” It’s designed to wake up the nervous system and build strength and flexibility, pushing practitioners beyond their perceived limits. This particular studio, The Yoga Dojo, has quickly become a favorite of mine.
I’ve only attended a few classes there, but each experience has been exceptional. The instructors are not only incredibly kind and welcoming but also profoundly knowledgeable, offering insightful adjustments and encouragement throughout the practice. Most of my previous yoga experience has been at a more beginner-friendly level, so this Rocket Vinyasa class truly challenged us, in the best possible way. I was particularly thrilled that we incorporated quite a few handstands, which is always a fun and empowering element to practice. It’s a wonderful feeling to push your boundaries and discover new capabilities within your body, and this class provided just that. Varying your exercise routine, especially by incorporating challenging yet rewarding practices like Rocket Vinyasa, is key to maintaining motivation and continuous physical improvement.
Nourishing Post-Workout Lunch: Quick & Wholesome Choices
After an intense 75-minute yoga session, Alex and I were both ready for a substantial meal. Fueling your body properly after a challenging workout is crucial for recovery and muscle repair. I quickly put together a couple of fresh salads for us, ensuring we got a good dose of greens and fiber. For Alex, I also whipped up a quick pizza – a perfect complement to his post-workout hunger. For myself, I opted for a comforting and nutritious bowl of split pea soup. I’ll admit, I’m not typically a huge fan of pureed soups, but split peas are an exception; I absolutely adore their hearty flavor and creamy texture. This particular soup was the convenient vegan split pea soup from Trader Joe’s, which is a fantastic grab-and-go option for busy days. However, if you prefer to make your own from scratch, I highly recommend this vegetarian split pea soup recipe – it’s my absolute go-to for a homemade version.

My original plan included an afternoon snack to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner. However, sometimes life calls for flexibility. Instead of preparing something new, I ended up simply finishing off the remaining split pea soup that was in the fridge. This highlights a key aspect of healthy eating: it doesn’t always have to be perfectly planned or elaborate. Sometimes, the best choice is the easiest and most convenient one, especially when it’s still nutritious. Listening to your body’s hunger cues and making smart, practical choices is far more sustainable than striving for unattainable perfection.
Evening Activities and Mindful Dinner Preparation
Later in the afternoon, Alex and I headed to church. We had initially planned to stay longer for a Sunday School class with the elementary school kids, which is always a heartwarming and engaging experience. However, the class ended up being canceled last minute. This unexpected change meant we had a little extra time on our hands, so we headed home to prepare dinner. This shift in plans allowed for a more relaxed approach to our evening meal, which can be a welcome change from rushing through dinner prep.
A Flavorful Dinner Adventure: Reimagining a Quinoa Bake
For dinner, I decided to make a variation of my go-to Mexican quinoa bake recipe. This dish is usually a household favorite, packed with flavorful spices and wholesome ingredients. However, this time, I decided to experiment by incorporating a corn salsa I had picked up from Trader Joe’s. While I’m usually a fan of trying new ingredients, this particular corn salsa turned out to be oddly sweet, which unfortunately threw off the entire flavor profile of the bake. It was a good reminder that not every experiment in the kitchen will be a resounding success, and sometimes, sticking to what you know works best is the way to go. From now on, I’ll definitely be sticking to the original recipe, or at least using a different corn salsa! Despite the unexpected flavor twist, the meal was still satisfying and packed with nutritious plant-based protein.

Winding Down: Steps, Groceries, and a Moment of Relaxation
After dinner, despite a light drizzle, Alex and I went for another quick walk. Hitting my 10,000 steps for the day is a personal goal I strive for, and even a little rain wasn’t going to deter me! This evening stroll was a great way to aid digestion and enjoy a bit more fresh air. Following our walk, I made a quick trip to the grocery store to stock up on essentials for the week ahead, ensuring I was well-prepared for more healthy meals. Once home, we settled down for some well-deserved relaxation, sharing a bowl of popcorn while catching up on a little TV. It was the perfect way to unwind after an active and productive day. All in all, it was a genuinely “clean” day of meals, focused on whole, nutritious foods, coupled with plenty of physical activity and a balanced approach to wellness.
I’m incredibly excited for the next eight weeks of this Tone It Up challenge. It’s more than just working out and eating well; it’s about building a sustainable healthy lifestyle and being part of an empowering community. If you’re curious about what a deeper dive into the Tone It Up program looks like, I highly recommend revisiting the recap of my first experience with it, particularly when my friend Kate and I tackled the 7 Day Slim Down together. It offers insights into the structured meal plan and workout routines, and how impactful it can be.
