This March Life

Life has a wonderful way of presenting us with opportunities for growth and rediscovery, and recently, I’ve found myself embracing several new beginnings and rekindling old passions. It feels like the perfect time for a comprehensive update, a look back at the exciting developments that have been shaping my days. From hitting the pavement with fresh determination to finding serenity on the yoga mat, and from mastering the art of efficient meal prep to exploring the joy of music, these past weeks have been a journey of self-improvement and delightful discoveries.

Embracing the Pavement: My Running Comeback Journey

One of the most significant changes in my routine, and arguably the most exhilarating, has been my return to running. This isn’t just a casual jog; it’s a full-fledged commitment after a hiatus that stretched for far too long – specifically, since completing a challenging half marathon back in 2012. Getting back into the rhythm after such a long break has been an adventure, to say the least. The initial runs were certainly rough, a stark reminder of the endurance and consistency I once had. However, the motivation is strong, fueled by a clear goal: I’ve officially signed up for the Monument 10K in April, and my training regimen has commenced!

The beauty of this comeback isn’t just in the physical act of running, but in the community I’ve found along the way. I’m incredibly fortunate to have a couple of friends who are also embarking on their own running rediscoveries. This shared journey has proven to be an invaluable asset, transforming what could be a solitary and daunting task into a much more enjoyable experience. Running with company provides a vital distraction, allowing me to focus on conversation and camaraderie rather than the inevitable fatigue that creeps in. The miles seem to melt away faster when you’re sharing stories, encouraging each other, and pushing towards a common goal. This accountability and social interaction are game-changers for maintaining consistency and making the training process genuinely fun. We’ve been exploring new routes, discovering hidden gems in our neighborhood, and celebrating small victories with every successful run. It’s a testament to how much easier and more sustainable a fitness journey becomes when you have a supportive network by your side.

Finding My Stride: The Quest for the Perfect Running Shoes

A crucial step in any successful running journey, especially a comeback, is ensuring you have the right gear. My old running shoes were well past their prime, practically falling apart, and I knew that investing in a proper pair was non-negotiable for injury prevention and comfort. So, I made a dedicated trip to Roadrunner in Carytown, a specialty running store known for its expert fitting services. I walked in with a preconceived notion, initially believing I’d opt for another pair of Brooks Adrenaline, a brand I’d trusted in the past for their reliable support and cushioning.

However, the beauty of a professional fitting lies in trying on a variety of options and truly listening to your feet. After meticulously testing the Brooks Adrenaline, I also laced up a pair of Saucony Hurricanes, and finally, the Nike Air Zoom Odysseys. To my genuine surprise, it was the Nikes that truly stood out. I honestly did not expect to prefer them, as I hadn’t gravitated towards Nike for serious running shoes before. Yet, the moment I put them on, they felt absolutely amazing. They offered an incredible amount of support, which is paramount for protecting joints and ensuring stability during long runs, while simultaneously being surprisingly lightweight. This combination of robust support and minimal bulk is a runner’s dream, allowing for a natural stride without feeling weighed down, even as the miles add up.

While I wasn’t entirely thrilled with the specific color and pattern of the pair I chose – a vibrant combination that wasn’t my usual preference – the practicalities won out. These particular shoes were on sale, offering significant savings compared to the standard price, especially when considering the black version was almost twice as expensive. Sometimes, function and value take precedence over aesthetics, and in this case, it was a worthwhile compromise for both my feet and my wallet. I’ve already started the crucial process of breaking them in over the past few days, incorporating them into my shorter training runs, and I can confidently say they’re already feeling fantastic. Proper running shoes are an investment in your health and performance, helping to prevent common running injuries like shin splints or runner’s knee, and I’m thrilled to have found a pair that perfectly supports my renewed running ambitions, providing both comfort and confidence with every step.

Finding Serenity: A Restorative Yoga Experience

Beyond the high-impact world of running, I recently discovered a beautiful contrast in the calming realm of yoga. My friend Shannon decided to celebrate her birthday in the most unique and thoughtful way imaginable: by hosting a yoga class at Shockoe Slip Yoga. It was an inspired choice, offering a refreshing and rejuvenating alternative to traditional birthday festivities, providing an opportunity for collective relaxation and mindful movement rather than just a party.

Together, we immersed ourselves in a restorative yoga class, an experience that I absolutely adored. Having never tried restorative yoga before, I was curious about its approach. The best way I can describe it is akin to a guided nap – but with profound benefits beyond simple rest. The studio was equipped with an array of props, and we were literally provided with a cozy blanket and a soft pillow, setting the stage for ultimate comfort and relaxation. This gentle, prop-supported practice is designed to allow the body to fully relax and heal, melting away tension and stress, making it an ideal practice for anyone needing to slow down and de-stress from the demands of daily life.

The atmosphere was incredibly serene, with soft lighting and calming music, enhancing the overall sense of peace. The instructor guided us through various poses, which we would hold for a generous period of 3-5 minutes. For anyone familiar with typical Vinyasa or power yoga classes, this is an exceptionally relaxed and slow pace, focusing entirely on passive stretching and deep relaxation rather than active engagement. We used bolsters, blocks, and blankets to fully support our bodies in each pose, allowing muscles to release tension without effort. Normally, I find it challenging to sit still for extended periods, my mind often racing with thoughts of to-do lists and future plans. However, the teacher at Shockoe Slip Yoga did an extraordinary job of keeping us grounded and focused on our breath and body sensations. Her soothing voice and expert guidance created an environment where it was easy to surrender to the moment and truly let go, practicing true mindfulness.

The benefits were immediate and profound. When I walked out of that class, I felt utterly amazing – a sense of deep calm, mental clarity, and physical ease washed over me. Restorative yoga is not just about stretching; it’s about activating the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting healing, reducing stress hormones, and improving sleep quality. It’s the perfect complement to a more active lifestyle, offering a much-needed balance of exertion and repose. The gentle nature of the practice also aids in muscle recovery, making it particularly beneficial after strenuous activities like running. I left feeling refreshed, centered, and completely revitalized, a testament to the power of mindful relaxation and the importance of incorporating practices that nurture both body and mind.

Mastering Efficiency: Diving into the Meal Prep Craze

In parallel with my physical activities, I’ve also been making significant strides in optimizing my nutrition and time management through meal prepping. I’ve truly gotten more on board with the “meal prep craze,” and for good reason – it’s a game-changer for maintaining a healthy lifestyle amidst a busy schedule. The core principle is simple: dedicate a few hours once or twice a week to prepare meals and snacks in advance, ensuring you always have nutritious options readily available. This proactive approach eliminates the stress of daily cooking decisions and drastically reduces the temptation to resort to less healthy, convenient options when time is short.

One of my recent meal prep successes involved whipping up a large batch of these incredible chocolate avocado muffins. The genius of these muffins lies in the healthy fats from the avocado, which not only makes them incredibly moist and satisfying but also provides sustained energy, preventing those dreaded energy crashes. Having a ready supply of these made it incredibly easy to ensure I always had a wholesome and delicious snack packed with me for work, preventing those impulsive, less healthy choices that often arise from hunger and lack of preparation. They’re perfect for a quick, nutritious breakfast on the go, a nourishing mid-afternoon pick-me-up, or even a healthier dessert alternative.

Another staple in my meal prep rotation has been a huge batch of homemade vegetable soup. This nutrient-packed soup has become our savior on those particularly hectic evenings when there’s simply no time or energy to cook a full meal from scratch. It’s incredibly versatile, packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and warms you from the inside out, making it ideal for cooler evenings. Preparing it in advance means that a healthy, satisfying dinner is just a reheat away, eliminating the temptation for takeout or unhealthy processed foods. Meal prepping isn’t just about saving time; it’s about taking control of your health, managing your budget by reducing impulse buys and food waste, and significantly reducing daily stress related to food choices. This topic truly deserves its own dedicated post, filled with tips, recipes, and strategies for beginners and seasoned preppers alike, so definitely expect more insights on meal prep to come in the future, covering everything from batch cooking techniques to smart storage solutions.

Harmonious Beginnings: Exploring the World of Piano

Beyond the physical and nutritional aspects of life, I’ve also been venturing into the enriching world of music. As I briefly mentioned on Wednesday, Alex has recently embarked on the delightful journey of learning to play the piano. This new endeavor has brought a wonderful energy into our home, filling it with the sounds of practice and discovery. It’s inspiring to witness the dedication and focus required to learn a new instrument, and it’s something that has piqued my own interest in understanding the fundamentals of music and how it all comes together.

To support Alex’s learning, and perhaps to satisfy my own burgeoning curiosity, I actually ordered a few more books specifically focused on music theory. Diving into music theory has been surprisingly fun and incredibly enlightening. It’s fascinating to understand the building blocks of music – scales, chords, rhythm, and harmony – and how they all come together to create the melodies and pieces we love. It’s like learning a new language, one that communicates emotion and beauty in a universal way. This intellectual challenge offers a different kind of mental workout, enhancing cognitive skills, memory, and problem-solving abilities, which can have positive ripple effects into other areas of life. The process of connecting theoretical knowledge with practical application on the piano is a truly rewarding experience.

The anticipation is building as we eagerly await the arrival of a duet book. The idea of playing piano together, creating harmonies and rhythms as a team, is incredibly exciting. Sharing a hobby like this strengthens bonds and provides a unique avenue for connection and shared accomplishment, making the learning process even more enjoyable and motivating. It’s a wonderful reminder that learning and exploration are lifelong pursuits, offering endless opportunities for joy and personal enrichment, whether it’s on the running path, the yoga mat, in the kitchen, or at the piano. These diverse interests provide a holistic approach to well-being, proving that a rich life is built upon a balance of physical activity, mental stimulation, and emotional fulfillment. 😉
