The Weekend Edit

To declare this past weekend as merely “busy” would be a significant understatement. Indeed, it was a whirlwind of activities, shared laughter, and new experiences, yet it effortlessly joined the ranks of my most cherished and invigorating weekends. As many of you know, I thrive on these vibrant, action-packed days, finding immense joy and rejuvenation in every moment. So, rest assured, there’s absolutely no complaint here – only gratitude for a truly spectacular few days that perfectly blended culinary delights, sporting excitement, and intellectual exploration.

The exhilarating marathon of the weekend kicked off on Friday night with a delightful dinner shared among dear friends at Fresca on Addison, a culinary gem that unequivocally holds a special place in my heart as one of Richmond’s absolute favorite dining establishments. What makes Fresca truly exceptional, beyond its warm and inviting ambiance, is its unwavering commitment to a fully vegetarian menu. This dedication ensures a consistent and inventive array of dishes that never fail to impress. Every visit is a new adventure for the palate, and I can honestly say I’ve never encountered a dish here that didn’t leave me utterly satisfied and planning my next return.

During this particular visit, Alex and I embarked on a shared culinary journey, indulging in two of their signature pizzas: the vibrant kale pizza and the aromatic pesto pizza. While the kale pizza steadfastly remains my personal champion – its unique blend of flavors and textures is simply unparalleled – the pesto pizza proved to be an equally formidable and delicious contender, bursting with fresh, herbaceous notes. Our friend Lauren, sharing my appreciation for Fresca’s greens-laden masterpiece, also opted for the kale pizza, demonstrating its widespread appeal. Meanwhile, Sarah, ever the adventurous eater, ventured into new territory with their intriguing lentil burger, a testament to the menu’s diverse and creative offerings.

Our friends were wisely fueling up for the upcoming Monument 10K race, an admirable feat of endurance that always brings a vibrant energy to the city. Alex and I, on the other hand, were content with our roles as enthusiastic supporters and cheerleaders, reveling in the good company and exceptional food. If you reside in or are simply passing through Richmond, Virginia, I cannot recommend Fresca highly enough. It truly encapsulates everything one could desire in a dining experience: genuinely good prices, extraordinarily fresh and flavorful food, and a clear dedication to utilizing awesome, high-quality ingredients. Saturday brought with it an exciting change of scenery as Alex and I embarked on a spontaneous road trip north to Washington D.C. The primary objective? To catch a thrilling Nationals baseball game, an outing made even more enjoyable by the company of Alex’s sister, her boyfriend, and a wonderful contingent of our closest friends. It was my very first time visiting Nationals Park, and the experience was nothing short of fantastic. The weather graced us with its absolute perfection – a clear, warm day with a gentle breeze, creating the ideal atmosphere for enjoying America’s favorite pastime. The stadium itself was impressive, buzzing with an infectious energy that amplified the excitement of the game. Naturally, no baseball game experience is complete without its traditional culinary accompaniments, and I happily indulged in copious amounts of fluffy popcorn and crispy french fries. Sometimes, a little indulgent treat is simply necessary to complete the sensory experience of such a vibrant event, and I embrace those moments wholeheartedly.

Following the exhilarating atmosphere of the ballpark, our group transitioned to a more relaxed and intimate setting: a lively grill-out at a friend’s house in the D.C. area. The evening air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of grilling food and the cheerful chatter of good company. Demonstrating thoughtful hospitality, our hosts had thoughtfully prepared delicious black bean burgers especially for Alex and me, ensuring that our dietary preferences were comfortably accommodated. This small gesture highlighted the beauty of shared meals and the joy of catering to friends. Beyond the burgers, we also took the opportunity to slice up some fresh zucchini, tossing the vibrant green pieces onto the grill where they quickly softened and developed a delightful char. It’s always a win when you can effortlessly sneak in some extra vegetables, even during a celebratory feast! These moments, where delicious food meets genuine camaraderie, truly define the essence of a perfect weekend.

Sunday, the final chapter of our eventful weekend, was dedicated to a dose of intellectual stimulation and historical marvel. We ventured out to the Smithsonian Institution National Air & Space Museum, specifically its expansive Udvar-Hazy Center located just outside the bustling city. This colossal facility is a true treasure trove for anyone fascinated by aviation and space exploration. It’s an awe-inspiring museum, boasting an incredibly vast collection of aircraft and spacecraft, from pioneering flight machines to modern marvels and iconic space shuttles. Each exhibit tells a profound story of human ingenuity, courage, and relentless pursuit of the unknown. There was an immense amount to see and absorb, with colossal planes suspended overhead and legendary spacecraft meticulously displayed. I was incredibly glad I had my camera with me, even if I was limited to my trusty 55mm lens. Despite the focal length constraints for capturing such grand subjects, it offered a unique perspective, allowing me to focus on intricate details and the impressive scale of these historical artifacts. The experience was truly immersive and educational, offering a tangible connection to humanity’s incredible journey through the skies and beyond.

As Sunday evening drew to a close, we made our way back to Richmond, feeling a profound sense of contentment and rejuvenation. It was, without a doubt, a fantastic weekend filled with cherished memories and diverse experiences. Reflecting on the culinary choices of the past few days, I acknowledge that I might not have adhered strictly to my usual regimen of nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. There were moments of indulgence, like the ballpark popcorn and fries. However, these experiences have continually reinforced a crucial lesson I’ve learned over time: a single weekend of deviating from a perfect diet will not, in fact, derail my overall health journey. A bag of popcorn or a serving of french fries simply won’t “make or break” my long-term dietary habits or well-being. It’s about the broader pattern, the consistent choices made day-in and day-out.

That being said, a subtle but undeniable truth emerged from these indulgences: I noticeably had less energy when I wasn’t consistently fueling my body with the wholesome, nourishing foods it typically thrives on. This observation served as a powerful reminder of the direct connection between nutrition and vitality. It underscored the importance of mindful eating and the profound impact that what we consume has on our physical and mental state. Ultimately, this weekend, like many before it, reaffirmed a fundamental principle for a healthy and fulfilling life: it truly is all about balance. Balance between healthy eating and occasional treats, between active pursuits and restful moments, and between structured routines and spontaneous adventures. Embracing this holistic approach allows for both enjoyment and sustained well-being, proving that a rich life doesn’t require rigid perfection but rather flexible, joyful living.
