The Journey to a Kitchen Transformation: Why We Chose Professional Refinishing

As the heart of our home, the kitchen sees constant activity, and while its layout has always been functional, the aesthetics were a different story. Our original light maple cabinets felt dated and weren’t our style, while the dark green countertops screamed for an update. We envisioned a brighter, more modern space that reflected our tastes and stood the test of time. The decision was clear: replace the countertops with elegant quartz and give the cabinets a fresh, new look.

Having tackled numerous DIY projects in the past – from a full basement renovation to smaller home improvements – we understand the effort and time involved. However, with our demanding schedules, we were short on time and determined to hire this particular project out to professionals. We knew that proper cabinet painting requires meticulous preparation, specialized tools, and a skill set beyond typical DIY tasks, making it an ideal candidate for outsourcing.

Selecting a Cabinet Refinishing Service: Comparing Options and the N-Hance Appeal

The search for the right cabinet refinishing company led us to gather several estimates, a crucial step in any major home improvement project. For those in our local area, we considered quotes from reputable companies like Short Pump Painters and H. J. Holtz & Son, alongside N-Hance. Each presented a different approach and price point, prompting us to weigh various factors beyond just cost.

What truly piqued our interest in N-Hance was their distinctive process, highly recommended by friends who had used their services. Their method involves using a specialized UV light to cure the paint directly on the cabinets, promising a significantly more durable finish. The N-Hance representative eloquently described it as the difference between traditional nail polish and gel nail polish – a comparison that resonated deeply with me. Knowing from personal experience that gel nail polish is the only solution that consistently withstands the rigors of washing endless piles of dishes, this analogy perfectly illustrated the enhanced durability N-Hance claimed to offer. Given my extensive use of the kitchen, often for work, investing in a finish that could genuinely hold up to daily wear and tear seemed like a worthwhile expenditure.

N-Hance Cabinet Refinishing Cost: Breaking Down the Investment

The cost of any home renovation project is a significant consideration, and cabinet refinishing is no exception. The total price for N-Hance services is inherently variable, depending on factors such as kitchen size, the number of cabinet doors and drawer fronts, and the existing condition of the cabinetry. For our kitchen, the investment amounted to just under $6,000. This comprehensive quote included not only the painting service but also the addition of slow-closing doors and drawers to most of our cabinets – a modern convenience we highly desired.

To provide a clearer perspective on the scope of our project, our kitchen features approximately 40 cabinet doors and drawer fronts. This cost was notably higher than other estimates we received; for instance, Short Pump Painters quoted around $3,500 for a similar scope of work. While the N-Hance price point was substantially higher, the promise of superior durability through their UV curing process initially convinced us it was a justifiable premium for a high-traffic area like our kitchen.

Key Benefits of Choosing N-Hance: Durability, Efficiency, and Seamless Integration

Our primary motivation for selecting N-Hance was the promise of exceptional durability. We needed a cabinet finish that could withstand the demands of a busy household, and their unique UV light curing process seemed to offer precisely that – a robust, long-lasting surface resistant to the inevitable bumps and scratches of daily life. The “gel nail polish” comparison wasn’t just a marketing hook; it addressed a genuine need for resilience in our kitchen.

Beyond durability, the efficiency of the N-Hance process was another significant advantage. The entire transformation, from start to finish, took a remarkably swift five days. Their team initiated the process by carefully removing all cabinet doors and drawer fronts, which were then transported to their shop for painting. This off-site approach minimized disruption within our home. For two days, the kitchen was then cordoned off while they meticulously painted the cabinet frames and bases on-site. A major convenience was that we weren’t required to empty the contents of most cabinets, except for the two with glass doors, as we chose to have their interiors painted for a cohesive look.

Adding to the seamless experience, N-Hance collaborated effectively with Capitol Granite, the company responsible for replacing our countertops. This coordination meant that we were able to have both the cabinet refinishing and countertop replacement completed concurrently, ensuring our kitchen was only out of commission for a total of one week. As someone who frequently uses her kitchen for work and meal preparation, this accelerated timeline was an invaluable perk, significantly reducing the inconvenience and allowing us to return to normal routines quickly.

A Visual Transformation: Our Before & After N-Hance Kitchen Photos

Witnessing the transformation of our kitchen has been truly rewarding. The visual impact of fresh, modern cabinets combined with new countertops completely revitalized the space. Here’s a look at our kitchen before N-Hance, followed by the stunning after result:

The color selection was a point of considerable deliberation, but we are ultimately pleased with the outcome. While the photos might show the color as slightly more muted and cool-toned, in person, it’s a beautiful, subtly warmer grey. We chose “Argos” by Sherwin Williams, a versatile shade that complements various design elements. The new countertops are pristine white quartz, featuring just a hint of delicate veining, which adds texture and elegance without overpowering the space. This combination created the bright, sophisticated aesthetic we had hoped for.

Unveiling the Problems: Disappointments and Concerns with N-Hance

While the initial aesthetic transformation of our kitchen was pleasing, our experience with N-Hance over the past year has revealed several areas of significant disappointment. Despite the overall satisfaction with the refreshed look, certain issues have emerged that temper our recommendation.

Customer Service and Unfulfilled Promises: The Slow-Close Hinge Debacle

One of our specific requests was for the addition of slow-close hinges to all cabinet doors and drawers, a modern convenience that greatly enhances kitchen functionality. To our dismay, three cabinet doors – one beneath the sink and two on the island – were inexplicably overlooked and did not receive the slow-close hinges. Upon discovering this oversight, we contacted N-Hance, and they assured us they would return to rectify the issue. However, despite our follow-up call a week later, requesting them to complete the job, our calls went unanswered, and the hinges were never installed. This lack of responsiveness post-service was a major letdown.

Furthermore, during the consultation, the N-Hance team made it sound as though the cabinet finish came with a comprehensive warranty. They specifically mentioned that they would provide touch-up services for any scratches resulting from normal wear and tear. Given their unresponsiveness regarding the missed hinges, our confidence in their willingness to honor any future warranty claims for paint touch-ups has significantly diminished. This discrepancy between initial promises and post-service follow-through raises serious concerns about their commitment to customer satisfaction.

Durability Under Scrutiny: Premature Wear and Tear

The primary selling point for choosing N-Hance was the promised durability of their UV-cured finish. Unfortunately, after just one year, some areas of our cabinets are already showing noticeable signs of wear. Specifically, the drawer that conceals our trash can, a high-traffic area by definition, has accumulated a significant number of scratches on its top surface. Considering the relatively short time since the cabinets were painted, this premature wear is quite disheartening. While we do have leftover paint for touch-ups, the fact that such a prominent area has deteriorated so quickly casts doubt on the “gel nail polish” level of durability we were led to expect. It’s disappointing that a finish marketed for its exceptional resilience hasn’t held up better in a mere twelve months.

Installation Quality Concerns: Crooked Hardware and Misaligned Holes

The cabinet refinishing cost also included the drilling of additional holes to accommodate new hardware. We were upgrading from single knobs to sleek handles, a detail that required precision. Regrettably, some of the new handles were installed crookedly, creating an uneven and aesthetically jarring appearance. We had not anticipated this being an issue, but upon closer inspection, it became clear that the problem stemmed from two sources:

  • In some instances, the cabinet doors themselves appeared not to be hung perfectly level, exacerbating the crooked look of the handles.
  • In other cases, the second hole drilled for the handles was not precisely aligned above the existing hole, leading to a noticeable slant.

These minor, yet highly visible, imperfections detract from the overall professional finish and demonstrate a lack of attention to detail during the final installation phase. For a service priced at the higher end of the market, such basic quality control issues are unacceptable.

Final Verdict: Would We Recommend N-Hance for Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing?

After a year of living with our N-Hance refinished kitchen cabinets, our recommendation is nuanced, leaning towards a negative overall assessment. On the positive side, the initial process was indeed fast and relatively easy, minimizing disruption to our household. The cabinets, immediately after completion, looked absolutely beautiful, and the team did an excellent job of sanding down previous wear and tear spots, making them appear brand new. The efficiency of having our kitchen out of commission for only a week, especially with concurrent countertop installation, was a definite advantage and a credit to their logistical coordination.

However, these benefits are overshadowed by significant disappointments. The promise of unparalleled durability, the primary reason we chose N-Hance and paid a premium, has not been fully realized, with noticeable wear appearing prematurely on high-use areas. Furthermore, the lack of attention to detail regarding the missed slow-close hinges and the crooked hardware installation is frustrating. Most concerning is the complete lack of follow-through and responsiveness from N-Hance when issues arose, effectively rendering any implied warranty or post-service support meaningless. Knowing that we could have achieved a similar aesthetic result for almost half the price with a company like Short Pump Painters makes us feel that we significantly overpaid for the actual quality of the work and the customer service received. Given the combination of premature durability issues, poor attention to detail, and a disappointing post-service experience, we would not recommend N-Hance for kitchen cabinet refinishing. While the initial transformation was impressive, the long-term value and customer support did not align with the premium price tag.
