Embarking on a journey back to my roots in Ohio for Easter weekend was an experience brimming with warmth, family, and cherished moments. While my ambitious plan to capture every scenic vista with my camera didn’t quite materialize as I’d hoped – a classic “oops” moment for any enthusiast – the memories I gathered through delicious meals and heartfelt connections are far more vivid than any photograph could convey. This year’s Easter celebration was a beautiful reminder of the simple joys of being home, surrounded by the people who matter most. Join me as I recount the culinary highlights and memorable moments from a truly special Easter Sunday, focusing on vibrant, healthy choices and the sheer delight of reconnecting with family and friends.
The day began with a commitment to a healthy and energizing start. Waking up early, I embraced the tranquility of the morning before the day’s festivities truly kicked off. My breakfast ritual was a nourishing bowl of creamy yogurt, generously topped with an assortment of fresh, vibrant berries, providing a burst of antioxidants and natural sweetness. Accompanying this wholesome meal was a steaming cup of coffee, its rich aroma and comforting warmth setting the perfect tone for a day of celebration and gratitude. This balanced beginning was key to fueling both body and mind for the joyful events ahead, proving that even on holidays, prioritizing nutritious choices can enhance the entire experience.
A Heartfelt Easter Service & Musical Moments
Our next stop was the local church, where we gathered for a special Easter service. It was an incredibly uplifting experience, filled with beautiful music, inspiring messages, and, most wonderfully, the opportunity to reunite with countless familiar faces from the community where I grew up. Seeing old friends and mentors, exchanging greetings and catching up on years gone by, truly added another layer of warmth to the holiday. The highlight of the service for me, however, was a deeply personal one. My mom and I had the privilege of playing a piano duet, a moment that was both thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking. It had been quite some time since I last performed publicly on the piano, and the thought of playing for such a large congregation brought a flutter of anticipation. Despite the initial jitters, the experience of creating music with my mother, blending our melodies, was incredibly rewarding and created a memory I will always cherish. It was a beautiful way to contribute to the festive atmosphere and celebrate the spirit of Easter through the universal language of music, surrounded by the loving embrace of our church family.
Dining Out: Savoring Vegetarian Delights at Max & Erma’s
Following the inspiring church service, our family and some dear family friends headed to Max & Erma’s for a relaxed and delicious lunch. The atmosphere was lively, perfect for catching up and sharing stories. When it came to choosing my meal, I opted for a savory black bean burger, a consistently satisfying vegetarian choice. I made sure to pair it with a refreshing side salad, which I cleverly ate first to ensure I got a good portion of greens into my meal right away. The burger itself was really good, boasting a delightful blend of textures and flavors. However, I must confess, it didn’t quite reach the legendary status of the veggie burger served at the Northstar Cafe. The Northstar Cafe’s version holds a special place in my heart, renowned for its unique blend of ingredients and irresistible taste, setting a high bar for all other veggie burgers. Nevertheless, the Max & Erma’s black bean burger was a thoroughly enjoyable and wholesome option, allowing me to stick to my healthy eating principles even while dining out with loved ones. It’s always a win when you can find delicious plant-based options that everyone enjoys, making dining out a pleasure rather than a challenge. This lunch was a perfect example of balancing holiday indulgence with mindful choices, all while creating new memories with cherished company.
Harvesting Freshness: An Unconventional Easter Feast
As the afternoon progressed, I made a quick but essential stop at the grocery store. My mission: to stock up on an abundance of fresh, vibrant produce. There’s something incredibly satisfying about filling a cart with colorful fruits and vegetables, knowing they’ll soon transform into delicious and nourishing meals. My mom and I then embarked on preparing our Easter dinner, which, by traditional standards, might be considered quite unconventional. Eschewing the typical holiday roasts, we instead focused on a fresh, plant-forward spread. My plate was piled high with a generous serving of a truly magnificent kale salad, complemented by perfectly roasted broccoli. The kale salad was a masterpiece of textures and flavors, featuring tender kale leaves, finely shredded purple cabbage for a delightful crunch, crisp apple slices adding a touch of sweetness, and a sprinkle of savory Parmesan cheese. The dressing, a simple yet elegant concoction of fresh lemon juice, rich olive oil, and tangy apple cider vinegar, brought all the ingredients together harmoniously. After snapping a quick picture, I also added a handful of toasted walnuts on top, which provided an extra layer of healthy fats and a satisfying nutty crunch. The roasted broccoli, lightly seasoned and caramelized, offered a comforting and earthy counterpoint to the vibrant salad. This non-traditional Easter dinner was a testament to how flavorful and fulfilling plant-based meals can be, especially when shared with family. It was a refreshing departure from heavy holiday fare, leaving us feeling nourished, energized, and completely satisfied, proving that healthy eating can be both delicious and celebratory.

Evening Reflections & Cherished Connections
As Easter Sunday drew to a close, I rounded off the evening in the best possible way: catching up with a few of my closest friends over a “skinny” mojito. The atmosphere was light-hearted and filled with laughter, a perfect end to a day of family and celebration. We indulged in some chips and salsa, a classic snack that’s always a crowd-pleaser. I managed, with considerable effort, not to devour the entire plate, which felt like a small personal victory in the realm of mindful indulgence! My camera, having already been put away for the night, was officially “off duty,” so no pictures were taken of this delightful gathering. However, the absence of photographic evidence didn’t diminish the joy of the moment. It was incredibly refreshing to simply be present, to engage in meaningful conversations, and to reconnect with friends who feel like family. This entire weekend, in fact, had a wonderful nostalgic quality, transporting me back to my high school days. The sheer amount of quality time I was able to spend with my high school girlfriends brought back so many cherished memories and reinforced the enduring strength of those long-standing friendships. It was a beautiful reminder that while life takes us in different directions, some bonds are truly timeless and irreplaceable, making every reunion feel like picking up right where we left off.
