Step Inside Thomson House

The keys are officially in hand, and our incredible journey into homeownership has begun! It’s been a whirlwind of activity since Friday morning when we closed on our new abode. This past weekend was a marathon of moving, unpacking, and tackling essential projects, leaving us with tired feet, an aching back, and weary fingertips – but absolutely brimming with joy and excitement for every minute of this grand adventure. Please excuse the less-than-professional quality of some of the accompanying photographs; my primary camera was already tucked away in a box, so many of these shots were captured hastily with my phone. Despite the impromptu nature, I simply couldn’t wait to share a glimpse into our new life. To be entirely honest, much of the house still paints a picture very much like this:

From Moving Day Mayhem to Making Memories: Our First Weekend in the New House

As you can clearly see, our new home is currently a landscape of boxes, boxes, and more boxes. The sheer volume of our belongings became immediately apparent the moment we crossed the threshold! Fortunately, we weren’t alone in facing this delightful chaos. Our truly wonderful friends rallied around us on Saturday morning, providing invaluable assistance that saw every single item safely moved into the house by early afternoon. Their strength, camaraderie, and good humor transformed what could have been an overwhelming day into a collaborative and even enjoyable experience. We are incredibly grateful for their support, which truly underscored the spirit of community as we embarked on this new chapter.

Once everything was inside, the strategic unpacking began. Knowing that my parents would be arriving Saturday night, our immediate priority was to set up the bedrooms. We dove headfirst into unpacking dozens of boxes, transforming mere stacks of cardboard into functional sleeping spaces. The relief of seeing beds assembled and a semblance of order emerge in at least two rooms was immense, allowing us all to get some much-needed rest after a day of strenuous activity. Waking up Sunday morning, refreshed and ready, we immediately shifted our focus from settling in to getting down to business with the first round of home improvement projects. The journey of transforming this house into our dream home had officially commenced, and the energy was palpable.

Crafting the Heart of Our Home: Kitchen Dreams and Practical Upgrades

One of the areas we were most eager to tackle, and indeed one of the most exciting transformations underway, is the kitchen. This space, after all, is often considered the heart of any home, and we have grand plans for it! Here’s a little peek at its current state:

I’m beyond thrilled about this kitchen’s potential! I only wish I had a better, more comprehensive picture to convey its charm and the vision we have for it. My mom and I dedicated Sunday morning to a thorough cleaning session, scrubbing every surface and preparing it for the exciting updates to come. We envision a space that’s not only beautiful but also incredibly functional, perfect for preparing wholesome, delicious meals – a true testament to our passion for good food and healthy living. While we were immersed in creating a sparkling interior, Alex and my dad were hard at work outside, taking on a more strenuous but equally vital task: knocking down the old fence in our backyard. This ambitious project will pave the way for creating dedicated parking behind our house, a feature that will be absolutely amazing! No more endlessly circling the block in search of a parking spot, a common frustration with older city homes. This practical upgrade will significantly enhance our daily convenience and guest experience.

After successfully tackling the fence and the initial stages of backyard preparation, their invaluable handyman skills were redirected indoors to address a critical plumbing issue. As one might expect from a charming 90-year-old house, the water pressure throughout the property was, to put it mildly, pretty terrible when we moved in. While we anticipated some quirks in an older home, the dismal water flow was certainly a priority to fix. Fortunately, I am incredibly blessed to have both a very handy father and an equally skilled husband. These two superheroes rolled up their sleeves, assessed the situation, and replaced several key pipes. The immediate improvement was remarkable – water is now flowing much, much better, transforming mundane tasks like showering and washing dishes into far more pleasant experiences. Their expertise saved us a significant amount of hassle and expense, reinforcing the incredible value of having such talented individuals in our family network.

Settling In: Unveiling Our Guest and Master Bedroom Retreats

While still in various stages of being organized, both the guest and master bedrooms have progressed significantly since these initial snapshots. They are now comfortably filled with furniture, transforming them from bare spaces into cozy retreats designed for rest and relaxation. We worked diligently to prioritize these rooms, ensuring that our parents had a comfortable place to stay during their visit, and that we, too, could find solace amidst the moving chaos.

Here’s an early peek into the guest bedroom, featuring a candid mirror selfie! Yes, that’s me, already making myself at home.

The guest bedroom is designed to be a welcoming haven for visitors, offering comfort and privacy. We envision it as a serene space where friends and family can unwind after a day of exploring or simply enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep. Selecting the right furniture and bedding for this room was important, as we wanted it to reflect our hospitality and create an inviting atmosphere. It’s exciting to think about the many cherished memories that will be made within these walls, hosting loved ones in our new home. Meanwhile, the master bedroom is rapidly becoming our personal sanctuary, a space tailored for ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation. This room offers a beautiful flow into an adjoining sunroom, creating a bright and airy environment that we are absolutely falling in love with. The connection between these two spaces promises a unique blend of comfort and natural light, making our private quarters truly special.

Our Favorite Corner: The Irresistible Charm of the Sunroom

Without a doubt, if I had to pick a favorite room in the house right now, it would be the sunroom. This space is an absolute dream, flooded with natural light from every angle. Give me all the natural light, always! There’s something inherently calming and uplifting about being surrounded by abundant sunshine, and this room delivers it in spades. We envision this sunroom evolving into a true oasis, a multi-functional space where we can enjoy our morning coffee, delve into a good book, or simply relax and soak in the peaceful ambiance. It’s perfect for nurturing our growing collection of plants, creating a vibrant, green haven that connects us with nature even when we’re indoors. The potential for this room is limitless, and we’re already brainstorming cozy seating arrangements, stylish decor, and perhaps even a small desk for creative endeavors. It’s truly a place where we can recharge and find inspiration, a luminous extension of our master bedroom, promising many serene moments ahead.

I think the sunroom is undeniably my favorite room. It’s an absolute joy to be surrounded by so much natural light!

Prepping for Perfection: Living and Dining Rooms Get a Fresh Start

Moving on to the larger communal spaces, we’ve also dedicated significant effort to preparing the living room and dining room for their impending transformation. These rooms are the heart of our entertaining and daily family life, so we want them to feel welcoming, bright, and truly reflective of our personal style. Our first major task was meticulously sanding the walls in both areas. This labor-intensive but crucial step ensures a perfectly smooth surface, ready to receive a fresh coat of paint and create a flawless finish. Here’s a shot of the dining room as it stands right now, showcasing its current pristine white walls:

The existing white walls provide a clean, blank canvas, but we’re eager to infuse these spaces with warmth and character. After what feels like an endless amount of deliberation, countless trips to the paint store, and an array of swatches adorning every wall, I believe I’ve finally settled on the perfect paint colors for both the living and dining rooms. Choosing the right palette has been a significant decision, as these colors will set the mood and tone for much of our home. We want shades that are both inviting and timeless, complementing the older charm of the house while bringing a fresh, modern sensibility. With the colors selected and the walls meticulously prepped, the next exciting phase is just around the corner. Hopefully, by later this week, I’ll be able to share updated photos of freshly painted walls, truly bringing these rooms to life!
