As I recently shared in my previous post, my partner Alex and I had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate Christmas just the two of us over the weekend. It unfolded into such a joyful and memorable day, full of cherished moments and delicious food. I thought it would be a delight to take you through our entire culinary journey, showcasing exactly what we savored during our festive, intimate celebration.
The magic of Christmas morning often begins with a warm, comforting ritual, and ours was no exception. We started our day with steaming mugs of coffee, the rich aroma filling our cozy space, perfectly complemented by some delightful chocolate chip biscotti. I know biscotti might not be everyone’s go-to pastry, perhaps perceived as too firm or dry by some, but I’ve truly grown to appreciate its satisfying crunch and subtle sweetness. This particular batch, studded with generous chocolate chips, was utterly perfect for dunking into our morning brew, softening just enough to create an irresistible melt-in-your-mouth texture. It’s a wonderful way to ease into a special day, providing a gentle start before the day’s excitement truly unfolds.
After we had slowly savored our coffee and biscotti, exchanging quiet words and enjoying the morning light, it was time for the first round of present opening. The joy of gifting and receiving, even when it’s just between two people, is truly heartwarming. After the initial unwrapping, we paused for another sweet treat – a Christmas tradition that holds a special place in my heart: warm, gooey cinnamon rolls. For my family, these soft, spiral pastries, generously slathered with sweet icing, are an indispensable part of Christmas morning. While I typically try to avoid starting my day with such a significant sugar rush, holidays are a time for joyful exceptions, and I simply couldn’t resist indulging in this beloved tradition. The smell alone brings back a flood of childhood memories, making every bite feel like a warm hug.
With our stomachs happily content from the morning’s delights, we returned to opening more presents, savoring each moment and the thoughtful gifts exchanged. Following this, we dedicated some precious time to simply relaxing and engaging in heartfelt conversation. The week leading up to Christmas had been incredibly busy for both of us, leaving little room for quiet, uninterrupted chats. So, this period of peaceful togetherness, just the two of us, catching up on everything and nothing, felt incredibly valuable. It’s often in these simple, unhurried moments that the true spirit of the holidays, centered around connection and companionship, shines brightest.

A Festive Family Lunch and Afternoon Wellness
As lunchtime approached, our plans shifted to include extended family. We decided on a favorite and convenient option: Chinese food. We picked up an array of delicious dishes and headed over to my brother and sister-in-law’s house. This visit was particularly exciting as I hadn’t seen my lively nephews for a few weeks, and it was important for me to connect with them before Christmas officially arrived. Sharing a meal with family is always a highlight, especially during the holidays. We spent a wonderful afternoon together, filled with laughter, lively conversations, and the joyful chaos that only young children can bring. Playing games, watching their excitement, and simply being present in their company while enjoying our favorite Chinese dishes made the experience truly special and memorable.
The latter part of the afternoon was a mix of productivity and personal well-being. We dedicated some time to tying up a few loose ends for the holidays, ensuring everything was perfectly in place for the upcoming celebrations. After handling these tasks, I felt a familiar urge to move my body. While initially I wasn’t entirely in the mood for a workout, a little boost of motivation arrived when I remembered I could wear my brand new tank top. This stylish top was a thoughtful gift from my wonderful Tone It Up bestie, Samantha. Trying on new workout gear always provides an extra spark, and that day, it was all the encouragement I needed to get going.
I opted for a focused kettlebell workout, challenging myself with various swings, squats, and presses. It was a fantastic way to counteract some of the holiday indulgences and generate a good sweat. As expected, the workout was intense and incredibly effective, leaving my muscles feeling wonderfully sore for the remainder of the weekend. It’s always a satisfying feeling to push your body, especially during a season that often leans towards relaxation and rich foods. Finding that balance between festive enjoyment and personal wellness is key to truly feeling good throughout the holidays.
An Impromptu Dinner and a Festive Evening
As evening settled in and dinner time approached, I found myself in a common holiday dilemma: what was I truly hungry for? We were in full “clean-out-the-fridge-before-the-holidays” mode, which meant our culinary options were a bit more limited than usual. The goal was to use up existing ingredients and minimize waste before stocking up for the official Christmas feast. This often requires a bit of creativity and flexibility in the kitchen, turning whatever is on hand into a satisfying meal. It’s a practical approach that can often lead to unexpectedly delicious combinations.

After a thorough assessment of our refrigerator, I made a spontaneous decision: to finish up the exquisite goat cheese I had recently picked up from Ellwood Thompson’s. This wasn’t just any goat cheese; it was from Goats R Us, a local producer whose cheese is, quite frankly, seriously amazing. Its creamy texture and delicate tang are absolutely unparalleled. To accompany this star ingredient, I sliced a crisp, fresh apple and added some crunchy pretzel slims that I had grabbed during a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. It might sound like a rather unconventional combination – goat cheese, apple, and pretzels – but it was surprisingly harmonious. The sharp tang of the goat cheese beautifully contrasted with the sweet crispness of the apple, while the salty crunch of the pretzel slims added a delightful textural element. It truly hit the spot, proving that sometimes the best meals are the ones created from simple, unexpected pairings.
After our relaxed and unconventional dinner, our evening continued with festive cheer as we headed to a Christmas party hosted by some dear friends from church. It was a lovely gathering, filled with warmth, laughter, and the joyful spirit of the season. While I did find myself nibbling on a few delectable treats throughout the evening, I made a conscious decision to keep my phone tucked away. I’ve been making a more concerted effort lately to keep my phone out of sight when I’m spending time with friends and loved ones, prioritizing genuine connection and being fully present in the moment over capturing every single detail. Sometimes, this means that pictures don’t happen, but the memories created without the lens of a screen are often far more vivid and precious.
Balancing Indulgence and Wellness During the Holidays
