Saturday’s Food Adventures

After what felt like an exceptionally demanding and fast-paced few weeks, the prospect of a weekend with minimal commitments and a wide-open schedule was nothing short of a dream. There’s a particular kind of joy that comes with an unscheduled Saturday, a canvas ready to be painted with simple pleasures and moments of personal rejuvenation. This past Saturday began exactly as I’d hoped – with a focus on nourishing my body and setting a positive tone for the day. My morning ritual commenced with a crisp, vibrant Pink Lady apple, its sweet-tart flavour a delightful wake-up call for my taste buds. Alongside it, a generous dollop of creamy almond butter provided a satisfying richness.

almond butter and apple, healthy breakfast

I must confess, I have an unwavering obsession with the almond butter from Trader Joe’s. It’s truly a cut above the rest, boasting a luxuriously smooth consistency that makes it utterly perfect for dipping. Whether it’s with apple slices, banana, or even just straight from the spoon (don’t tell anyone!), it’s an absolute staple in my pantry. This simple yet effective combination of fruit and healthy fats provides sustained energy, helping me feel full and satisfied. To further kickstart my metabolism and prepare for the day’s activities, I also enjoyed a comforting cup of freshly brewed coffee, its inviting aroma filling the kitchen. More importantly, recognizing the importance of proper hydration, especially before physical exertion, I made sure to down a large glass of water. This pre-workout hydration is crucial for optimal performance and recovery, and I was determined to give my body the best possible start.

friends doing an intense BBG style workout in a park

With my energy levels topped up and feeling well-hydrated, it was time to move! I met up with a fantastic group of friends at the local park for an invigorating BBG-style workout. For those unfamiliar, BBG, or Bikini Body Guides, is the brainchild of fitness sensation Kayla Itsines. Her programs are renowned for their high-intensity interval training (HIIT) circuits, which are designed to build strength, improve endurance, and torch calories. If you’ve ever embarked on one of her challenging routines, you already understand the intensity – it was, as expected, a killer workout! The morning air was initially a bit brisk, bringing a refreshing chill that made us question our outdoor choice for a moment. However, as soon as we launched into the dynamic movements, the jumping jacks, burpees, and power squats, our body temperatures quickly rose, and we warmed up fast. There’s a unique energy that comes from exercising outdoors with friends; the camaraderie and shared effort push everyone to their limits. We meticulously followed the circuit depicted in the photo above, completing it a total of four times. This involved two rounds of the first circuit, followed by two rounds of the second circuit, and then repeating the entire sequence. The sheer volume of jump squats felt like it might be the end of me – my quads were screaming, and my lungs were burning! Yet, despite the intense challenge, I didn’t actually die (thankfully!). Instead, once the final rep was complete and the initial fatigue subsided, an incredible sense of accomplishment and invigoration washed over me. The endorphin rush was phenomenal, leaving me feeling truly amazing and ready to conquer the rest of the day.

fresh tangerine for a healthy snack

After that high-energy session, my body was definitely craving some immediate replenishment. The walk home felt earned, and as soon as I stepped through the door, I made a beeline for the kitchen. My chosen post-workout recovery snacks were a juicy tangerine and a delightful mini avocado muffin. I’ve been absolutely loving tangerines lately, especially the ones I pick up from Trader Joe’s (yes, the Trader Joe’s theme continues!). Their bright, citrusy flavour is incredibly refreshing, and they’re packed with Vitamin C, which is great for immunity and aiding recovery. However, I must air a small grievance: the sheer number of seeds in each tangerine can be a tad frustrating! Peeling and deseedling can turn a quick snack into a mini archaeological dig. Next time, I think I’ll opt for their seedless clementines for a more effortless citrus fix. The mini avocado muffin was the perfect sweet treat, offering a dose of healthy fats and a satisfyingly dense texture. It’s always a good idea to have easily digestible carbohydrates and a bit of protein or healthy fat after a strenuous workout to help kickstart muscle repair and energy restoration.

Later in the afternoon, with my energy levels replenished and a productive morning behind me, Alex and I embarked on a rather unglamorous but essential home improvement project: painting half of our basement. There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with tackling these tasks, even if they aren’t the most glamorous. We dedicated the entire afternoon to this endeavour, and I quickly learned a valuable, albeit messy, lesson: waterproofing paint does not come off your skin easily! Despite vigorous scrubbing, I definitely still had some stubborn flecks clinging to my leg when I headed to work on Monday. It was a testament to the paint’s durability, if nothing else! Yet, despite the minor cosmetic inconvenience, the hard work paid off. We managed to apply two full coats of paint to both the walls and the ceiling, transforming the space and providing much-needed protection. There’s an immense sense of accomplishment in seeing such a significant project through to completion, and I’m incredibly glad to have that particular task checked off our ever-growing home improvement list.

By approximately 4 PM, with the painting done and brushes cleaned, both Alex and I were thoroughly exhausted and, predictably, in dire need of a pick-me-up. Our appetites had been working overtime alongside our arms!

cheese and crackers, evening snack

We opted for a classic and comforting snack: splitting some cheese and crackers. I had been particularly excited to try a Spanish cheese sample pack I recently picked up from, you guessed it, Trader Joe’s. Are you sensing a delightful theme here with my frequent shout-outs to TJ’s? Their unique product selection often sparks my culinary curiosity. However, I must admit, I was a little bummed this time around. While the cheeses were certainly palatable, I was hoping for a greater variety in flavour profiles. Unfortunately, they all seemed to taste quite similar, which wasn’t really the diverse tasting experience I was anticipating. Nevertheless, the combination of savory cheese and crisp crackers was exactly what we needed to tide us over until dinner, providing a much-appreciated moment of shared relaxation after a productive afternoon.

As evening approached, we decided to venture out for dinner, heading to the charming Libbie & Grove area. It had been quite some time since we last visited The Continental Westhampton, so it was a delightful treat to go back there! The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance, often bustling with energy, and offers a welcoming atmosphere perfect for a relaxed evening meal. Reconnecting with a favourite local spot always adds a special touch to a weekend outing, and we were looking forward to a delicious and well-deserved dining experience.

One of the many reasons we adore The Continental Westhampton is their incredibly vegetarian-friendly menu. This is a rare and much-appreciated quality in many establishments, where often vegetarian options are limited to one or two afterthought dishes. Here, the selection is so robust that we genuinely had a hard time deciding what to order – a wonderful problem to have! After much deliberation, I finally settled on the zucchini falafel wrap, a choice I certainly didn’t regret. The falafel was perfectly spiced and crispy, complemented by fresh vegetables and a flavourful sauce, all nestled in a soft wrap. Alex, meanwhile, opted for the eggplant parmesan, another enticing vegetarian delight. Being the generous partner he is, I managed to trade some of my crispy french fries for a few delicious bites of his eggplant parmesan. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, bursting with fresh flavours and expertly prepared. It truly is a delight to dine at a place where the vegetarian offerings are not only plentiful but also incredibly well-executed. This positive experience only reinforced our desire to return to The Continental Westhampton again very soon. Having actual choices on a menu, rather than just a handful of basic options, makes dining out a truly enjoyable and exciting experience for us.

After a wonderful dinner out, we made our way back home, ready to wind down. The perfect end to an eventful and fulfilling Saturday involved settling in on the couch, watching a fascinating documentary on Netflix. These quiet, shared moments are often the most cherished. To complete the evening, I indulged in a few squares of rich, dark chocolate – a small, delightful treat to cap off a day filled with activity, good food, and great company. All in all, it was a perfectly balanced weekend, a harmonious blend of productivity, fitness, delicious meals, and much-needed relaxation. Not a bad way to end the week at all!

What’s your absolute favorite thing to buy from Trader Joe’s? (Or, if you don’t have a TJ’s nearby, what’s your favorite recent grocery store purchase that you can’t stop raving about?)
