Conquering the Monument 10K: A Day of Grit, Gumption, and Gourmet Delights in Richmond
The crisp air of a Saturday morning in Richmond often signifies the perfect backdrop for a refreshing start to the weekend. However, this particular Saturday, Alex and I were met with a formidable combination of cold, biting wind, and a sporadic mix of snow and hail as we prepared to tackle the iconic Monument 10K. This isn’t just any race; with an astounding participation of over 36,000 runners, it stands as a colossal event in the heart of Richmond’s vibrant community, a true test of spirit and endurance. Having participated in this magnificent race several times in the past, a couple of years had slipped by since my last attempt. Returning to the bustling energy of the starting line, embracing the challenge once more, felt invigorating despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions. It was a day that truly celebrated the joy of running and the enduring community spirit.
Fueling the Body: Essential Pre-Race Nutrition
Understanding the critical role of proper nutrition, especially before a demanding physical event, I began my day with a meticulously chosen pre-race breakfast. My go-to fuel for sustained energy and easy digestion comprised a hearty protein shake complemented by a generous serving of almond butter. This combination is not just delicious but strategically designed to provide long-lasting energy without weighing you down, making it the perfect race fuel. With our bodies adequately prepared, we then embarked on the journey towards the starting line. What many runners often forget is the preparation that begins even before the first whistle. Our walk of approximately a mile to the official starting point served as an excellent warm-up, gradually awakening our muscles and mentally preparing us for the miles ahead amidst the growing excitement of the throng of fellow participants.

Navigating the Monument 10K: The Thrill of the Race
The weather, as predicted, was undeniably cold, necessitating a thorough bundling up to brave the elements. Layering was key, and while the initial chill was pervasive, the warmth generated from running soon took over. I was particularly grateful for my trusty headband, which provided invaluable protection for my ears against the biting wind throughout the course. Despite the challenging conditions, I was immensely proud to have run the entirety of the race, a personal victory that often supersedes mere timing. While I didn’t surpass my previous race record, the satisfaction of completing the 10K without walking was a significant achievement. The first two miles were particularly demanding, marked by persistent rain and a relentless cold. Thankfully, my friend Carin joined me for this initial stretch, her presence and camaraderie providing much-needed motivation and distraction from the elements. Her support made a substantial difference in pushing through those difficult early miles. As if on cue, the sun made a welcome appearance around my third mile, instantly uplifting spirits and transforming the remainder of the race into a truly enjoyable experience, bathing the historic Monument Avenue in a much-appreciated warmth.

Post-Race Recovery: Rejuvenating Tired Muscles
Upon crossing the finish line, the physical exertion immediately manifested as profound exhaustion. The journey back to the car, another walk of almost a mile, felt significantly longer than the pre-race trek. By the time I finally settled into the passenger seat, my legs were heavy, a testament to the effort expended. This immediate post-race period is crucial for recovery, and refueling the body promptly is paramount. On our way home, we made a pit stop at Ellwood Thompson’s, a local favorite known for its fresh, wholesome, and organic offerings. I opted for a nourishing combination of yogurt, fresh fruit, and crunchy granola. This trio is an ideal post-race meal, providing essential carbohydrates to replenish glycogen stores, protein for muscle repair, and a burst of vitamins and antioxidants from the fruit. It’s a scientifically sound approach to kickstarting the recovery process.

Interestingly, despite the intense physical activity, I wasn’t as ravenously hungry as I typically anticipate after a long run. The yogurt and fruit combination effectively satiated me for a while. To further complement my recovery, I also snacked on the remaining multigrain crackers from Trader Joe’s, offering a delightful crunch and additional complex carbohydrates. This unconventional “brunch/lunch” post-race meal, though perhaps not traditional, perfectly hit the spot, proving that listening to your body’s specific needs after a race is key. It’s not always about a massive meal, but rather thoughtful, nutrient-dense choices.

An Afternoon of Relaxation and Culinary Delights
The afternoon following the race was dedicated entirely to rest and relaxation, a well-deserved respite for our tired bodies. We spent the majority of it indulging in the simple pleasures of lounging around and catching up on television. While unwinding, we shared a snack of baked chips and guacamole. However, this particular guacamole, being the pre-packaged variety from Trader Joe’s, regrettably fell short of expectations. It served as a stark reminder that when it comes to guacamole, nothing quite compares to the vibrant freshness and rich flavor of a homemade preparation.

As evening approached and our appetites rekindled, we opted for the convenience and comfort of takeout for dinner from The Savory Grain, a highly-regarded local establishment known for its innovative and delicious menu. For my main course, I savored their exquisite warm kale salad. This culinary masterpiece featured perfectly grilled kalettes, a delightful hybrid vegetable resembling a miniature fusion of kale and Brussels sprout. These unique greens were generously topped with creamy goat cheese, crunchy pecans, sweet pear slices, and intensely flavored sun-dried tomatoes. The combination of textures and flavors was simply divine, a testament to thoughtful ingredient pairing. If you haven’t had the pleasure of trying kalettes, I wholeheartedly recommend them; they are surprisingly flavorful and a wonderful addition to any meal, truly exceeding expectations.

To further indulge in some much-needed comfort food after the physical demands of the day, I also shared a portion of their incredibly satisfying mac n cheese with Alex, a fair trade for a generous helping of his crispy French fries. This exchange epitomized the perfect balance of indulgence and satisfaction, a well-deserved treat after pushing our limits. The mac n cheese, rich and creamy, offered the ultimate comfort, precisely what my body and mind craved. We rounded off the perfect evening by splitting a bottle of fine red wine and immersing ourselves in a captivating 30 for 30 documentary on Netflix. It was an evening that truly embodied relaxation and contentment, a flawless conclusion to a challenging yet rewarding day.

Embracing the Running Journey: Future Goals and Motivation
Participating in the Monument 10K has reignited my passion for running, solidifying my commitment to making it a consistent part of my routine once more. The initial phase of getting back into running has been undeniably challenging. Every single mile, particularly in those first few runs, felt like an uphill battle, demanding immense mental and physical fortitude. However, I’ve come to realize that a significant portion of this struggle, perhaps even more than half, is purely mental. It’s about overcoming perceived limitations and pushing through discomfort. Now that I have successfully completed the 10K and reaffirmed my capability, my goal is to maintain this momentum and build upon it. The journey of running is as much about mental resilience as it is about physical endurance. Thankfully, I am surrounded by a vibrant community of fellow runners in my neighborhood, offering a fantastic support system and opportunities for shared runs. I am optimistic that this community aspect will serve as a powerful motivator, helping me to stay consistent and dedicated to my running goals. This isn’t just about fitness; it’s about fostering a healthy lifestyle, setting personal challenges, and finding joy in every stride.
