This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to revisit the Natural Products Expo in Baltimore, an event I’d attended a couple of years prior. My previous experience gave me a clearer understanding of what to expect, and this year’s expo certainly didn’t disappoint. It remains an unparalleled platform for discovering groundbreaking innovations and getting a sneak peek at the natural products destined to grace our shelves and influence consumer trends in the coming year. The energy was palpable, with countless brands showcasing their commitment to health, sustainability, and deliciousness. As I navigated through the bustling aisles, sampling myriad offerings and engaging with passionate creators, several compelling trends and remarkable products truly caught my attention. Here’s a comprehensive look at the exciting developments poised to reshape our perception of natural food and wellness.
The Dynamic Rise of Plant-Based Dairy Alternatives
The proliferation of plant-based products, particularly in the dairy alternative sector, was strikingly evident. From a diverse array of nut milks and yogurts to increasingly sophisticated dairy-free cheeses and ice creams, this category is experiencing explosive growth. This surge isn’t entirely surprising; a quick glance at your local grocery store’s “milk” aisle reveals a landscape far beyond just almond milk. We now see an impressive selection of cashew milk, macadamia nut milk, and innovative nut-based creamers, reflecting a significant shift in consumer preferences. Data from leading industry groups like the Plant Based Foods Association and The Good Food Institute further solidifies this trend, reporting that plant-based food sales were up 8.1% compared to the previous year. This upward trajectory shows no signs of slowing down, driven by increasing awareness of health, environmental impact, and ethical considerations. Here are a few of the standout new products I had the pleasure of sampling:
One notable discovery was Milkadamia, crafted from premium macadamia nuts. Their product line includes original, unsweetened, unsweetened vanilla, and a dedicated “Latte de Barista” blend. The original macadamia nut milk presented a clean, subtle flavor profile that, to my palate, wasn’t drastically different from my usual almond milk. However, I rarely consume plain milk alternatives on their own. The true star for me was their Latte de Barista. Specifically formulated to be extra creamy and froth beautifully, it promises to be a game-changer for coffee enthusiasts seeking a luxurious, dairy-free latte experience without compromise.
Califia Farms commanded a considerable presence, showcasing their entire impressive product portfolio. While I was familiar with their extensive range of milk alternatives, I was pleasantly surprised to discover their equally robust line of cold brew coffees. Their diverse selection includes milk options made from coconut, almond, and cashew, alongside a far greater variety of unique flavors than many competitors. While I typically opt for unsweetened almond milk for its versatility, their enticing classic cinnamon horchata immediately struck me as a potential must-have seasonal indulgence, perfect for holiday gatherings or a festive morning treat. Califia Farms continues to innovate, pushing the boundaries of what plant-based beverages can offer.
Shifting focus from milk to fermented alternatives, Kite Hill impressed with their intriguing range of nut-based yogurts and cheeses. I’d previously tried their standard yogurt, finding it satisfactory but wishing for a thicker, creamier texture. At the expo, I sampled their Greek-style yogurt, which marked a significant improvement, offering a consistency much closer to traditional Greek yogurt. While not identical in density, it was certainly a step in the right direction for those craving that familiar richness. Their vegan ricotta, however, tasted predominantly of almonds to me, and while it might perform beautifully within a cooked recipe, I wasn’t particularly enamored with it served simply on a cracker. In contrast, the chive cream cheese was a clear winner. Its flavor was quite good, although its creaminess didn’t quite match that of most conventional cream cheese varieties. I also tried their new probiotic drink, which reminded me pleasantly of kefir. It boasted a decent texture and flavor, leaving no room for complaint, though it didn’t immediately strike me as a product I’d incorporate into my regular routine.
Innovative and Wholesome On-The-Go Snacks
The juggernaut of the granola and protein bar trend shows no signs of deceleration. This sustained popularity wasn’t a surprise, but I did observe a distinct emphasis on products marketed as vegan or paleo. While this caters to specific dietary preferences, I noted a relative lack of variety for consumers actively seeking options low in sugar or carbohydrates, with the primary focus heavily weighted towards added protein. Nevertheless, the ingenuity in this category continues to evolve, offering more exciting and functional choices for busy lifestyles.

Spice Trail Snacks introduced a genuinely unique concept: savory granola. While the idea might sound unconventional at first, it proved to be surprisingly satisfying. Available in three distinct flavors inspired by Indian, Moroccan, and Jamaican spice blends, these granolas challenged my initial skepticism. I found myself repeatedly drawn back for more samples. My particular enthusiasm stemmed from finally discovering a granola alternative that wasn’t laden with excessive sugar. It’s worth noting, however, that these still contain between 6g and 7g of sugar per serving, a consideration for those monitoring their intake. This innovative approach to granola offers a refreshing departure from traditionally sweet options, catering to a different kind of snack craving.
Fuller Foods presented a product that, while not a superfood, was undeniably delicious: their premium cheese puffs. For anyone who has consciously avoided the beloved cheesy puffs of their childhood, yearning for that unmistakable crunch followed by the powdery residue clinging to your fingers, these might just be the ultimate, cleaner alternative. Fuller Foods has managed to craft a surprisingly wholesome ingredient list, featuring non-GMO corn and real cheese. Despite not typically being a blue cheese connoisseur, I was absolutely captivated by their blue cheese jalapeno flavor – it was incredibly good. Finding these in stores can be a bit of a treasure hunt; remarkably, in Richmond, they are reportedly available at Bed Bath and Beyond. Who would have ever predicted such a retail pairing?
Brami introduced me to the fascinating world of pickled lupini beans. These unique legumes reminded me of a delightful cross between a lima bean and a butter bean in terms of texture and mild flavor. Apparently, lupini beans are a dietary staple in Italy, though they remain relatively uncommon in the United States. Their nutritional profile is truly impressive: one cup of cooked lupini beans boasts an astonishing 26g of protein. To put that into perspective, the same amount of cooked black beans contains approximately 15g of protein, highlighting the lupini bean’s exceptional protein density. Brami offers these protein-packed powerhouses in various delicious pickled flavors, positioning them as a truly innovative and healthy snack alternative.
Natural Sins aptly dubs their creations the “un-potato chip,” a description that immediately made sense upon tasting. My expectation was that these fruit chips would simply taste like dried fruit. However, they possess an extraordinary crispiness and crunch that elevate them far beyond typical dehydrated fruit. The mango chips were my personal favorite, though the pineapple variety was equally enjoyable. I could easily envision myself devouring these straight from the bag, but their unique texture and natural sweetness also make them an excellent topping for yogurt or smoothie bowls, adding both flavor and delightful texture.
Functional Beverages: Drinks with Added Benefits

Another prominent trend at the expo was the proliferation of “drinks with benefits.” This wasn’t merely about soda alternatives – though there were plenty of those – but rather about beverages designed to serve a specific purpose or deliver tangible health perks. While numerous new kombucha brands graced the market, my attention was particularly drawn to innovative tea and coffee options that promised more than just flavor. These were my top selections in the functional beverage category:
Javazen presented a fascinating mash-up of instant coffee and tea. Their innovation lies in offering tea bags filled with coffee grounds, enabling the creation of a single-serving cup of quality coffee with nothing more than hot water. This concept, while seemingly simple, was something I hadn’t encountered before. While instant coffee packets exist, their quality often leaves much to be desired. Javazen, however, delivered a remarkably delicious and convenient cup of coffee. They also offered a green tea and coffee blend which, to my surprise, was surprisingly enjoyable, defying my initial expectations and offering a unique flavor profile alongside potential health benefits.
My initial skepticism was high when approaching Four Sigmatic’s mushroom coffee. As someone who isn’t particularly fond of mushrooms, I half-expected it to taste like earthy soil. To my utter delight, it did not! Instead, it offered a surprisingly smooth and almost chocolaty flavor. These innovative coffee blends incorporate medicinal mushrooms like lion’s mane, chaga, and cordyceps, which are purportedly associated with immunity and energy-boosting benefits. While the scientific evidence behind some of these claims may still be evolving, incorporating these well-regarded superfoods into a daily routine certainly seems like a proactive step towards wellness. For those looking to introduce a unique and potentially beneficial twist to their morning coffee ritual, Four Sigmatic offers an intriguing option.
Cura Tea introduced an incredibly convenient instant tea, packaged just like a typical drink mix. Again, the simplicity was its genius. This product offers a fantastic solution for those moments when you desire iced tea but lack the time or inclination to brew a hot cup and wait for it to cool. With Cura Tea, you simply mix the contents of the packet into a cup of either hot or cold water, and it’s ready. During my college years, I had a phase of being obsessed with artificially sweetened flavored drink packets. Now, as a more health-conscious consumer, I’m generally wary of such products. Cura Tea, being unsweetened but still delivering a pleasant flavor, felt like an ideal, natural alternative, providing flavor and refreshment without added sugars.
Noteworthy Products: Standouts from the Expo Floor

Biena showcased their simple yet utterly delicious chickpea snacks. I brought home a bag of the sea salt flavor, which proved to be an excellent choice for satisfying a craving for something crunchy and salty. Biena has also ventured into an even more innovative territory with their recent launch of chocolate-covered chickpeas. While the concept might sound unconventional at first, I can wholeheartedly attest that they were truly exceptional—a delightful combination of sweet, crunchy, and satisfying. I also thoroughly enjoyed their habanero flavor, which offered a spicy kick perfectly balanced with a subtle hint of lemon. These chickpea-based snacks are a testament to how whole, natural ingredients can be transformed into satisfying, low-sugar, high-protein, and high-fiber treats. A win for healthy snacking on all fronts!
Tiny Hero presented an innovative approach to preparing quinoa, making it as effortless as cooking pasta. Their product requires no rinsing or precise measuring; you simply boil water, add the quinoa, cook, and then drain. While I personally have no issues preparing quinoa using my trusty rice cooker, Tiny Hero’s quinoa boasts a more sticky, rice-like texture. This characteristic makes it absolutely perfect for dishes where you desire that particular consistency, such as stir-fries or as a base for Asian-inspired bowls, offering a unique and convenient alternative to standard quinoa preparation.
Path of Life offers an extensive range of frozen foods, and at the expo, we sampled some of their excellent vegetable side dishes. My Midwestern roots ensure a perpetual fondness for good hash browns, and Path of Life delivered a truly delicious and notably healthier option. Their hash browns are a thoughtful blend of potatoes and quinoa, which cooked up perfectly crispy – a crucial factor for any hash brown enthusiast! Additionally, their kale and butternut squash blend stood out as a truly ideal side dish for the autumn season, combining wholesome ingredients with seasonal flavors.
The Toasted Oat may very well hold the title for the best granola I have ever tasted. I recognize this is a bold declaration, but the experience was truly incredible. While it’s not designed to be low-calorie, nor is it particularly high in protein or fiber, and it certainly isn’t low in sugar, every single indulgence is unequivocally worth it. Eating it felt akin to savoring an oatmeal cookie fresh from the oven, still warm and just beginning to cool, crumbling delicately in your mouth. This was, without a doubt, dessert granola. I wouldn’t consider it a breakfast staple, but it would absolutely be my go-to choice for a decadent dessert.
A recurring question we posed at nearly every booth was, “Where can I find this product in Richmond?” While the most common answers were familiar specialty grocers like Whole Foods or Wegmans, we also noticed a significant increase in brands leveraging Amazon for direct-to-consumer sales. Given the inherent challenges of securing prime shelf space in physical stores, it was incredibly reassuring to learn that many of these fantastic new natural products are readily accessible online, providing options for consumers even if these specialty grocery stores aren’t conveniently located nearby.
