My Montreal Food Odyssey

Exploring the Culinary and Cultural Delights of Montreal and Quebec City: A Vegetarian Traveler’s Guide

After a fantastic trip, it feels like the perfect moment to share the incredible experiences and, most importantly, the delicious food that made this vacation truly unforgettable. Our recent adventure through Montreal and Quebec City was an absolute joy, filled with breathtaking sights, fascinating history, and a surprising abundance of vegetarian-friendly culinary treasures. This wasn’t just a trip; it was a journey of discovery for both the palate and the soul.

Morning Rituals and the Legendary Montreal Bagel

Most mornings began with the comforting simplicity of coffee and a croissant, a quintessential European-inspired start to our Canadian days. However, one particular Thursday stood out, marking a culinary pilgrimage to the renowned St-Viateur Bagel. Before this trip, I hadn’t fully grasped that Canadian bagels, specifically Montreal bagels, held a legendary status of their own. But let me tell you, they live up to every ounce of their reputation – and then some!

The moment you step into St-Viateur, the aroma of wood-fired dough fills the air, promising an authentic experience. I chose a unique Rosemary Sea Salt bagel, generously adorned with creamy feta, rich olive oil, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, and sharp onion. It was an ambitious stack, making for a delightfully messy, yet utterly satisfying, breakfast. The distinct sweetness from being boiled in honey water, followed by the crispy, chewy perfection of the wood-fired oven, truly sets Montreal bagels apart from their New York counterparts. Each bite was a symphony of flavors and textures, proving why these Canadian delicacies are a “thing” worth celebrating.

Immersing Ourselves in Quebec’s Rich Culture and Scenery

Our days were packed with exploration, averaging an impressive amount of walking as we absorbed the rich tapestry of Quebec’s culture and history. From the captivating exhibits of numerous museums that delved into the region’s past and vibrant art scene, to a serene river boat tour offering panoramic views of the city skyline, there was no shortage of sights to behold. We even embraced our adventurous side by renting paddle boats, enjoying a different perspective of the waterfront and the charming architecture.

A stunning panoramic view of a historic city skyline from a high vantage point, with ancient buildings and a flowing river reflecting the bright sky, capturing the essence of Montreal's beauty.

This particular view, captured from one of the many magnificent museums we visited, perfectly encapsulated the charm of the city. We were incredibly fortunate with the weather for most of the week, enjoying clear skies and pleasant temperatures that made our extensive explorations even more enjoyable.

Unforgettable Vegetarian Lunches in Montreal

Montreal truly shone as a beacon for plant-based dining. Among the many culinary highlights, lunch at Lola Rosa stands out as a personal favorite. You might have even caught a glimpse of our visit on my Instagram feed! This charming vegetarian restaurant offered an inviting atmosphere and an innovative menu that tantalized our taste buds.

A delectable close-up of a hemp burger and a side of creamy, spicy jalapeño mac n’ cheese, beautifully plated on a wooden table, showcasing Lola Rosa’s mouth-watering vegetarian offerings.

Alex and I decided to share two of their most popular dishes: a hearty hemp burger and an utterly decadent jalapeño mac n’ cheese. Both were exceptionally flavorful and satisfying, showcasing how creatively and deliciously plant-based cuisine can be. However, if I had to pick, the spicy mac n’ cheese stole the show. Its creamy texture, perfectly cooked pasta, and the delightful kick of jalapeño made it an instant classic in my book. We couldn’t resist capping off this amazing meal with their famous Twix Pie, which was every bit as rich and delightful as it sounds – a perfect blend of chocolate, caramel, and biscuit in a heavenly dessert form.

Discovering Our Ultimate Favorite: Lov Restaurant

If we had to crown a single favorite dining spot in Montreal, it would undoubtedly be Lov Restaurant. In fact, we were so enchanted by its offerings that we made a return visit during our stay! Lov impressed us not only with its chic, minimalist-boho aesthetic but also with its entirely vegetarian menu, with the vast majority of dishes being vegan. This meant we could truly indulge without a single worry about ingredients, making it a stress-free and joyous dining experience.

One of the absolute must-tries for any vegetarian visiting Canada is, of course, poutine. For the uninitiated, poutine is a beloved Canadian staple consisting of crispy french fries, topped with squeaky cheese curds, and smothered in a rich gravy. Lov’s vegetarian poutine was a revelation. With their house-made vegetarian gravy, we simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try this iconic dish. While I generally prefer my fries with ketchup, experiencing authentic poutine, even in its vegetarian form, was a quintessential Canadian moment. It was rich, comforting, and surprisingly hearty – a true taste of local culture.

An artistic and gourmet vegetarian dish served in a bowl, featuring a colorful mix of ingredients like avocado mousse, pickled radishes, ricotta, squash blossoms, and beet chips, highlighting Lov’s innovative menu.

During our visits to Lov, we also ventured into more adventurous territory. We savored a truly interesting and beautifully plated dish featuring a delicate avocado mousse, complemented by the tangy crunch of pickled black radishes, creamy fresh ricotta, delicate squash blossoms, and crispy beet chips. It was a symphony of flavors – briney, tangy, and subtly sweet – offering a delightful contrast of textures. The beet chips were remarkably crunchy, providing an earthy sweetness, while the fresh ricotta perfectly balanced the richness of the avocado mousse. It was an exciting dish that showcased Lov’s innovative approach to plant-based cuisine.

To conclude one of our memorable meals at Lov, we enjoyed a sweet potato gnocchi served with a vibrant pesto. The gnocchi, soft and pillowy, had a delightful hint of sweetness from the sweet potato, which harmoniously contrasted with the peppery arugula it was nestled upon. This dish was a testament to how traditional favorites can be elevated with thoughtful, plant-based twists.

Navigating Vegetarian Options: Montreal vs. Quebec City

One of the most pleasant surprises of our trip was just how vegetarian-friendly Montreal proved to be. Not only did the city boast a significant number of dedicated vegetarian and vegan establishments like Lola Rosa and Lov, but even many “regular” restaurants readily offered appealing vegetarian options. This made dining out a consistently enjoyable and effortless experience.

However, the culinary landscape shifted somewhat as we transitioned to Quebec City. While undeniably charming and steeped in history, finding vegetarian options required considerably more effort. We found ourselves poring over menus, often relying on translation apps, to unearth suitable dishes. Many establishments focused heavily on meat and fish, with vegetarian choices being far less prevalent. Often, a “vegetarian” option might simply be a fish dish, which, while not meat, isn’t always what a strict vegetarian is looking for.

Despite the initial challenge, we were ultimately successful in discovering several lovely restaurants that offered delicious plant-based dishes in Quebec City. It simply required a bit more research, patience, and a willingness to explore beyond the immediate tourist hot spots. The effort was always rewarded with delightful meals in charming settings.

A Warm Welcome: Language and Hospitality in Quebec

Beyond the food, another striking observation was the remarkable hospitality and linguistic versatility of the people in both Montreal and Quebec City. Despite French being the primary official language, we were consistently met with incredible understanding and willingness to accommodate.

Almost without exception, as soon as we entered a store or restaurant and uttered a polite “hello” in English, the staff seamlessly switched to fluent English to assist us. This level of bilingualism was truly impressive and made navigating our trip effortless and enjoyable. Beyond their linguistic skills, everyone we encountered was unbelievably kind, friendly, and genuinely helpful. From restaurant staff to museum guides and shopkeepers, the warmth and welcoming spirit of the locals left a lasting impression.
