My March Roundup: Favorites & Fresh Finds

Hello, wonderful readers! It feels like a significant stretch since I last took a moment to truly connect with you all, to share what’s been occupying my mind, fueling my passions, and capturing my attention in these ever-evolving days. The past few weeks, honestly, have been nothing short of a whirlwind. A vibrant, demanding, and incredibly rewarding whirlwind that has left me playing a bit of catch-up on my end!

There’s been a conscious effort on my part to embrace a philosophy of ‘doing less’ – a deliberate shift towards finding more calm amidst the chaos. January and February offered a beautiful, much-needed change of pace, a gentle easing into the new year. But true to its reputation, March arrived with the roar of a lion, bringing a surge of energy and activity that has once again challenged my pursuit of perfect balance. It’s an ongoing journey, this quest for equilibrium, and one I suspect many of you can relate to.

In the midst of navigating this busy period, I stumbled upon a literary gem that profoundly resonated with me: Chasing Slow by Erin Loechner. You might have caught a glimpse of my excitement over on my Instastory, as I simply couldn’t wait to share its profound insights with you all. This book popped up as a recommendation on my library app, and I downloaded it on a whim, without fully grasping the depth of wisdom it held. From the very first chapters, it became clear that this wasn’t just another book about simplifying life; it was a deeply introspective look at the modern pursuit of ‘slow living’ and how, ironically, even the trend of minimalism can subtly lead us back into the relentless cycle of striving for an unattainable perfection. As Erin so eloquently puts it, chasing slow is still chasing something. This powerful realization struck a chord, making me pause and reconsider my own intentions behind seeking a less hurried existence.

Chasing Slow Book

Erin Loechner, a pioneer in the blogging world, started her online journey during the nascent days of digital content creation. Her memoir isn’t just a chronicle of her success; it’s a refreshingly honest narrative about the challenges of maintaining a curated, ‘perfect’ facade on social media and grappling with that all-too-familiar, insidious feeling of not being enough. Page after page, chapter after chapter, I found myself nodding in vigorous agreement, feeling a profound sense of recognition and validation. Her vulnerability in discussing these prevalent anxieties, particularly for those of us who share parts of our lives online, was incredibly impactful. If you’re searching for a book that offers both solace and a gentle challenge to re-evaluate your relationship with busyness, social media, and self-worth, I cannot recommend Chasing Slow highly enough. It’s a book that truly encourages you to breathe, reflect, and find contentment in the imperfect present, rather than constantly striving for an idealized future.

Speaking of things that have filled me with immense joy and a sense of accomplishment, I have some truly exciting news to share with you all…

I got to see my cookbook for the first time!

Receiving an early copy in the mail last Saturday was an incredibly surreal and heartwarming experience. Holding the physical manifestation of years of hard work, recipe testing, countless revisions, and unwavering passion in my hands was a moment I’ll cherish forever. It’s still sinking in, but the excitement is absolutely palpable as my debut cookbook, The Truly Healthy Vegetarian Cookbook, officially hits shelves on May 1st! This book is a labor of love, designed to empower you with delicious, accessible, and nourishing vegetarian recipes that are perfect for any occasion, from quick weeknight meals to impressive weekend spreads. Each recipe is crafted with health and flavor in mind, proving that wholesome eating can be incredibly satisfying and easy. I’ve poured my heart into creating a collection that I truly believe will inspire both seasoned plant-based enthusiasts and those just beginning their journey into vegetarian cooking. You can pre-order your copy here right now to ensure you’re one of the very first to receive it and embark on a delightful culinary adventure with me!

Amidst all the cookbook excitement and the general busyness, I carved out a few precious moments in the kitchen this week. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the simple joy of creating something delicious, and I simply couldn’t wait to share this super simple, yet incredibly satisfying, recipe with you!

A piece of cake sitting on top of a table

My go-to snack this week has been these unbelievably easy raw brownies. They embody everything I love about quick, healthy treats: minimal effort, wholesome ingredients, and maximum flavor. You won’t believe how simple they are, requiring literally just three core ingredients: nutrient-rich walnuts, naturally sweet dates, and decadent cocoa powder. For an extra touch of indulgence and fun, I couldn’t resist tossing in some mini chocolate chips – because who can say no to more chocolate?

The preparation couldn’t be more straightforward. I combined 1 cup of walnuts, 1 cup of pitted dates, and ½ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder in my trusty Nutribullet. A few pulses later, the mixture transformed into a sticky, crumbly dough. Then, I stirred in a handful of mini chocolate chips, pressed the mixture firmly into a small, parchment-lined pan, and chilled it until firm. I know it sounds almost too good to be true, but these truly taste like dense, fudgy little brownie bites – without any baking required! They offer that rich, chocolatey satisfaction without the added sugars and unhealthy fats often found in traditional brownies. Essentially, they are a homemade, much more cost-effective version of a chocolate Larabar, offering sustained energy and incredible flavor. They’re perfect for a quick energy boost, a post-workout treat, or simply to satisfy a chocolate craving guilt-free. Give them a try – you’ll be amazed!

On a slightly different note, a few of you have recently reached out asking for FitBit recommendations. While I appreciate the query, I feel it’s important to mention a significant change in my personal fitness tracking journey: after years of dedicatedly wearing a FitBit, I recently made the switch to a Garmin. My incredible husband, Alex, surprised me with this beautiful Garmin model for Christmas last year, and I have absolutely loved it ever since. While I’m definitely not a runner by any stretch of the imagination, I am committed to hitting my 10,000 steps a day, and having a reliable tracker is essential for that.

My FitBit, specifically the Alta, served its purpose well in terms of basic tracking, but I never truly connected with its aesthetic. Even with a cute leather band, I grew tired of seeing the prominent black tracker in nearly every photo I’d appeared in since 2015. It felt less like an accessory and more like a somewhat clunky piece of tech on my wrist, often clashing with my outfits or just generally standing out in a way I didn’t prefer. The desire for a more integrated, stylish, and perhaps more robust fitness companion ultimately led to my search for an alternative.

Garmin Vivoactive

What I adore about my new Garmin is how seamlessly it blends into my everyday style, looking much more like a regular, elegant watch. It’s sleek, sophisticated, and versatile enough to pair with anything from my Popflex sweatshirt (which I practically live in since Christmas) to dressier attire. It’s truly held up remarkably well to daily wear and tear. Beyond its appealing aesthetics, its functionality is exceptional. It precisely tracks my steps, monitors my heart rate throughout the day, accurately estimates calories burned, and even attempts to count flights of stairs climbed. An added bonus that I initially didn’t think I’d care much about is its seamless Bluetooth connection to my phone. Receiving texts, call alerts, and other notifications directly on my watch has proven to be incredibly convenient, allowing me to stay connected without constantly pulling out my phone, thereby fostering a healthier boundary with technology.

The Garmin Connect mobile app, which syncs with the watch, provides a comprehensive and user-friendly interface for reviewing all my activity data. In many ways, it’s quite similar to the FitBit app, offering clear insights into daily progress and trends. I’ve found the step tracking to be exceptionally accurate, providing reliable data for my daily goals. While it generally excels, I have noticed some inconsistencies when it comes to counting flights of stairs; sometimes it registers them perfectly, and other times it seems to miss a few, which remains a minor mystery to me. However, this is a very minor detail that doesn’t significantly detract from my overall satisfaction. It also features sleep tracking, which provides interesting insights into sleep patterns, though I can’t definitively vouch for its absolute precision, as with most consumer sleep trackers. Regardless of these small nuances, my experience with this Garmin has been overwhelmingly positive. The blend of sophisticated style, robust fitness tracking capabilities, and smart notification features makes it a standout device. So, if you’re in the market for a new fitness tracker that combines functionality with a much more refined look than many of its counterparts, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring the Garmin range. It truly elevates the wearable technology experience.
