As another year unfolds, marking my journey from 26 to 27, I find myself reflecting not with a lengthy retrospective, but with a heart full of gratitude for the moments that defined the past twelve months. This past year has been a tapestry woven with significant milestones, quiet joys, and profound changes that have enriched my life in countless ways. Rather than dwelling on every detail, I’d love to share the standout highlights and, more importantly, dive into the wonderful things that are currently bringing immense joy to my everyday life.
Turning 26 was a chapter filled with unforgettable experiences that truly shaped me. Among the most cherished were welcoming my second nephew into the family, a heartwarming expansion of our already loving circle. The joy of holding a new life, watching family grow, and stepping into the role of an aunt again brought an incredible sense of fulfillment. Additionally, the monumental step of buying our first house marked a significant personal achievement, transforming a dream into a tangible reality. The process, while challenging, was ultimately rewarding, laying down roots and creating a space that truly feels like home. And to top it all off, celebrating our first wedding anniversary was a beautiful testament to love, partnership, and growth, solidifying the foundation of a shared future. These moments, both big and small, have truly made 26 a remarkable year. As I step into 27, I’m filled with anticipation and excitement for the new adventures and lessons that await.
So, without further ado, let’s explore some of the wonderful things that are currently making life extra sweet:
Cherished Connections and Unexpected Reunions
One of the most delightful surprises this year brought was the relocation of one of my dearest, oldest friends to Virginia Beach. I can’t stress enough how much this means to me. While it’s still a couple of hours’ drive from Richmond, it’s an immeasurably shorter distance than the entire state of Ohio! This proximity has already proven to be a gift, allowing for spontaneous meetups and rekindled camaraderie. Just last night, I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with Alexa, Aaron, and Kelly over dinner, and it was nothing short of awesome. There’s a certain magic in reconnecting with friends who knew you “back when.” It felt just like our high school days, albeit with the added wisdom and perspective that comes with age. (What? Just kidding, mostly!) It’s a true joy to have such incredible people closer, making those precious moments together more frequent and accessible.
Embracing Life Transitions and Authentic Indulgences
Speaking of treasured friendships, I recently had a bittersweet catch-up session with Lindsay before her big move back to Asheville for nursing school. Our friendship story is a modern one, beginning years ago through a chance connection on Twitter. From online acquaintances, we evolved into genuine friends, and eventually even roommates. It’s truly fascinating how the internet can bridge distances and bring extraordinary people into your life. Saying goodbye, even temporarily, is never easy, but witnessing a friend pursue their dreams with such passion is incredibly inspiring. I was so glad we managed to squeeze in some quality time, sharing drinks and laughs with Kate before Lindsay embarked on her new adventure away from Richmond.
And since I believe in keeping things as real and authentic as possible here, I have to share my dinner choice from that evening: “mac n cheetos.” Yes, you read that right. I indulged in a plate of cheesy, crunchy goodness. Because while I certainly champion kale salads and green smoothies, life is also about balance and enjoying those moments of pure, unadulterated comfort food. It’s not always about perfection; it’s about listening to your cravings and embracing the simple pleasures. This commitment to honesty extends to local recommendations too!
Discovering Richmond’s Culinary Gems: Social 52 & Kuba Kuba
For my fellow Richmonders, or anyone visiting our vibrant city, let me give a shout-out to Social 52. Beyond the delicious “mac n cheetos,” this spot boasts a seriously sweet happy hour. Think generous pours and fantastic prices – a highlight being their $3 glasses of wine! The atmosphere is lively yet comfortable, making it an ideal spot for after-work drinks with colleagues or a relaxed evening with friends. It’s quickly become one of my go-to places, and I’m already planning my next visit.
Tonight, the culinary adventure continues as I’m asking Alex to take me to another one of Richmond’s beloved institutions: Kuba Kuba. This Cuban restaurant is legendary for a reason. From the moment you step in, the vibrant energy, the incredible aromas, and the authentic flavors transport you straight to Havana. Their Cuban sandwiches are legendary, the plantains are perfectly sweet, and every dish is crafted with passion. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience. Following our delicious dinner, I’ll be unwinding with a lovely glass of wine in the company of a few good friends. These simple, authentic moments – sharing good food, great conversation, and genuine laughter – are truly what make life special. They remind me that happiness often lies in the everyday, in the people we choose to surround ourselves with, and in the small indulgences that bring us joy. Life, in these moments, certainly doesn’t get much better than that.
As I embark on my 27th year, I carry with me a deep sense of appreciation for the milestones passed, the friendships cherished, and the simple pleasures that illuminate each day. This blog has always been a space for sharing these authentic moments, the highs and the occasional mac n cheetos, and I’m excited to continue this journey with you. The upcoming year feels full of promise, and I’m eager to see what new adventures and learning experiences it will bring.
