After dedicating the past few months to diligently following the Tone It Up meal plan, I found myself in need of a little flexibility this week. While the plan offers fantastic guidance for a healthier lifestyle, sometimes the body, and the soul, simply crave something different. My commitment to incorporating an abundance of fruits and vegetables remains unwavering, and I’m still mindful of my protein intake, but there are those days when only a slice of pizza will truly hit the spot. It’s all about finding that harmonious balance between structured wellness and joyful indulgence. Come along as I share a detailed glimpse into what I ate yesterday, a day that beautifully blended nutritious choices with the pure pleasure of good food.
Nourishing Starts: Breakfast & Morning Fuel
My day began with a commitment to a quick, yet incredibly satisfying and energizing breakfast. As Alex had an early meeting, speed was of the essence, but I refused to compromise on nourishment. I opted for a generous bowl of creamy Greek yogurt, swirled with a handful of vibrant, antioxidant-rich blueberries, and topped with just a sprinkle of Love Grown Granola for that perfect crunch and touch of sweetness. Greek yogurt is a powerhouse of protein and probiotics, essential for gut health and sustained energy, while blueberries provide a natural burst of vitamins. This combination isn’t just delicious; it’s a strategic choice for kicking off the day on the right foot, ensuring I felt full, focused, and ready to tackle whatever came my way. It truly hit the spot and set a positive tone for the hours ahead, proving that healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming.

Knowing that lunch might be a bit later than usual, I made sure to prepare a strategic mid-morning snack to keep hunger at bay. An apple with a dollop of peanut butter is one of my go-to combinations, offering a perfect blend of fiber, healthy fats, and protein to stabilize blood sugar and maintain energy levels. The crispness of the apple paired with the rich, nutty flavor of the peanut butter is a classic for a reason. However, I quickly realized that this particular snack wasn’t the most desk-friendly option. Attempting to spread peanut butter onto apple slices while simultaneously taking bites, all without making a mess, proved to be quite the balancing act! It served as a funny reminder that sometimes, even the healthiest choices require a bit of foresight regarding practicality, especially in a busy office environment. Despite the minor logistical challenge, it successfully tided me over until lunch.

Lunchtime Delights & Learning Moments
The glorious weather beckoned us outside, offering a delightful change of scenery for lunch. My coworker and I were thrilled to snag a coveted table outdoors, basking in the warm sunshine as we enjoyed our midday meal. I had prepared a giant salad, brimming with fresh greens and an assortment of colorful vegetables, accompanied by a few crackers for a touch of carbohydrate. The salad was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the simple pleasure of crisp, vibrant produce. It was truly tasty and felt like a wonderful, light option for a sunny day. However, in my haste, I made a critical oversight: I forgot to add beans. This seemingly small omission had a significant impact on the salad’s overall satiety. While delicious, it lacked the substantial fiber and plant-based protein that beans would have provided, leaving me feeling surprisingly hungry again within an hour. It was a valuable reminder that a truly satisfying salad isn’t just about volume; it needs a robust balance of macronutrients to keep you feeling full and energized. Next time, those beans are definitely making an appearance!
Thankfully, I had anticipated the possibility of needing an afternoon pick-me-up and packed a secret weapon: a small container of cereal for an afternoon snack. Love Grown Foods had sent me this particular cereal, and I’ve become absolutely smitten with it. Typically, I tend to gravitate towards granola, leaving most cereals for Alex, but this one is an absolute game-changer. It boasts a delightful flavor profile that subtly reminds me of classic fruit loops, evoking a sense of nostalgic comfort. What truly sets it apart, however, is its nutritional ingenuity; it’s made with beans! This innovative ingredient significantly boosts its protein and fiber content, transforming a simple cereal into a surprisingly wholesome and satisfying snack. It’s the perfect example of how healthy eating can be both delicious and fun. I munched on a portion of this delightful cereal and paired it with a juicy pear, though in my snack-time enthusiasm, I completely forgot to snap a picture of the latter. Whoops! Nevertheless, this combination provided the perfect energy boost to power through the rest of the workday, keeping that post-lunch slump at bay.
An Evening of Unique Date Night Adventures
With an upcoming trip to Austin later in the week, Alex and I decided to carve out some special time for a relaxed date night. While some might picture candlelit dinners and movie theaters, our evening took a delightfully unconventional turn, beginning with piano shopping. You know, just your typical romantic outing! We currently own a piano, a generous gift that served its purpose admirably, but it’s an older model with increasingly squeaky keys that sometimes sound more like a protesting duck than a melodic instrument. While we cherish its presence, we’re now at a stage where we’re ready to explore other options, seeking a more harmonious and responsive instrument that will truly inspire our musical endeavors. Browsing the showrooms, discussing different models, and even attempting a few hesitant chords together proved to be a surprisingly intimate and enjoyable experience, offering a glimpse into a shared future filled with music.
After our unique piano-hunting excursion, we transitioned to the more traditional part of our date night: dinner! We headed to 23rd and Main Taproom, a place that holds a special place in our hearts. The last time we dined here was for my birthday a couple of years ago, and it was wonderful to return. The restaurant has a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere, and on this particular evening, the weather was simply perfect. We were incredibly fortunate to snag one of their coveted outdoor tables, allowing us to soak in the gentle evening breeze and the lively streetscape. Dining al fresco always adds an extra layer of charm to any meal, making it feel like a mini-getaway, even if just for a few hours. It was the ideal setting for a relaxed and delicious meal after our earlier, slightly more unusual, adventure.
Culinary Delights: Appetizers & The Perfect Pizza
To kick off our dinner, we indulged in an absolutely incredible appetizer. It was a visually stunning platter piled high with creamy, authentic hummus, a colorful medley of fresh, crisp vegetables, savory feta cheese, and warm, pillowy flatbread. Each component was perfectly prepared, offering a symphony of textures and flavors. The hummus was rich and smooth, the vegetables added a refreshing crunch, and the feta provided a delightful salty tang. While we made a valiant effort, the generous portion size meant we couldn’t quite finish it all, but we certainly gave it our best shot! It was a fantastic start to the meal, awakening our appetites with its fresh and vibrant character, and setting the stage for the main event.
Our delicious Margherita Pizza, a true culinary highlight of the evening.
And then came the star of the show: a glorious margherita pizza that we eagerly shared. It was nothing short of divine, a masterclass in pizza perfection. The crust was exquisitely crafted – thin enough to be light, yet wonderfully chewy, providing that satisfying resistance with every bite. It struck the ideal balance that truly elevates a pizza. Adorned with fresh mozzarella, which melted into luscious, creamy pools, and a vibrant, perfectly seasoned sauce that I genuinely wanted to devour with a spoon, it was a culinary dream. The simplicity of a margherita pizza often belies its complexity, requiring exceptional ingredients and skilled execution, and 23rd and Main Taproom absolutely delivered. It instantly brought back fond memories of the incredible pizza we savored at Stuzzi, a testament to its exceptional quality. Every slice was a testament to authentic Italian flavors, and honestly, this dinner was so good, I’m already counting down the days until our next visit!
A Sweet Ending to a Perfect Day
Once we arrived back home, feeling wonderfully full and content, we settled into our cozy spot on the couch. It was the perfect opportunity to wind down, catch up on a little TV, and indulge in a final sweet treat. Our choice for the evening was some “slow churned” ice cream, which, in essence, is a delightful way of saying low-fat ice cream. I’ll admit, sometimes low-fat options can be a hit or miss, but this particular brand was surprisingly good! It had a rich, creamy texture and a satisfying flavor that truly hit the spot without making me feel overly decadent. It was a delicious, guilt-free pleasure, a perfect conclusion to a day that seamlessly blended conscious eating with the sheer joy of culinary exploration and shared experiences. Ending the day with a simple, sweet moment of relaxation made the entire experience feel complete and utterly fulfilling. It was a beautiful reminder that a balanced lifestyle leaves ample room for both nourishing choices and cherished indulgences.
