It’s been a little while since I’ve opened up about the things currently bringing joy and inspiration into my life, and honestly, there’s been so much happening behind the scenes! From transforming neglected corners of our home into functional, beautiful spaces to rediscovering the simple pleasure of a good book, I’m thrilled to share what I’m loving lately. It’s a wonderful mix of home improvements, personal growth, and small indulgences that collectively make everyday life a little brighter. So, let’s just dive right into these delightful discoveries and transformations!
Our home journey has recently taken a significant turn, particularly concerning our often-overlooked home office. For a couple of years since we moved in, this room had inadvertently become the notorious “dumping ground” – a catch-all for anything without a designated spot, a growing mountain of “I’ll-deal-with-it-someday” items that had become utterly overwhelming. It was the sole room in the house that hadn’t received a fresh coat of paint or any thoughtful styling, rendering it virtually unused and uninviting. The visual clutter translated into mental clutter, and I knew it was time for a serious intervention. I finally decided enough was enough. My approach was simple yet effective: systematically toss the things we genuinely didn’t need, thoughtfully get rid of items I no longer liked or found useful, and then strategically introduce a few new pieces to cohesively tie the room together, transforming it from a neglected storage unit into a productive, serene workspace.

The transformation has been incredibly rewarding, and one of my absolute favorite finds that truly anchored the room’s new aesthetic was this magnificent vintage chair. I stumbled upon it on Craigslist – a platform often overlooked but brimming with potential treasures – and snagged it for an unbelievable $40! There’s truly nothing quite like the thrill of finding such a significant steal, especially when it becomes a statement piece that brings so much character and history into a space. We opted to keep our existing, sturdy desk, which still serves its purpose perfectly, but we completely revamped the floor space by switching out the old, tired rug for a new, more modern one. This single change instantly updated the room, providing a fresh foundation and tying together the diverse elements with its contemporary pattern and subtle texture. It’s amazing how a foundational piece like a rug can redefine the entire ambiance of a room, making it feel current and cohesive.

Another crucial addition to our newly organized office space was a set of elegant vertical shelves. We sourced these stunning marble shelves from World Market. While their aesthetic appeal is undeniable, I must confess, they are incredibly heavy! A huge shout-out and thank you go to Alex, who was an absolute champ, dedicating a significant portion of a Saturday afternoon to painstakingly mounting them onto our plaster walls. It was quite the undertaking, requiring careful measurement, specialized tools, and a good dose of patience, but the effort was entirely worth it. The shelves instantly elevated the room, providing much-needed vertical storage and display opportunities without taking up precious floor space. I’m still in the process of fine-tuning their styling – it’s a creative journey, after all! – but for now, they beautifully showcase a collection of vibrant succulents, bringing a touch of nature indoors, alongside various small containers that discreetly hide office essentials. These shelves aren’t just functional; they’re a focal point, drawing the eye upwards and adding an element of sophisticated charm to the entire room.
Beyond the office, my quest for charming and affordable home accessories has led me to another delightful discovery: the home collection from H&M. While they don’t seem to carry an extensive range of their home goods in local brick-and-mortar stores (at least not in my area), their online selection is a treasure trove of stylish finds. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed browsing their digital aisles, and recently placed an order that included some truly fun pillow covers and other small decorative accessories. It’s a fantastic resource for refreshing spaces without breaking the bank, offering trend-forward designs that effortlessly elevate any room.

Just look at how incredibly cute this particular pineapple pillow cover is! It’s such a vibrant and playful design that instantly injects personality into a sofa or armchair. What’s truly amazing about H&M Home is the sheer variety of designs they offer, many of them priced at less than $10. This makes it an incredibly cheap, yet highly effective, way to switch up the aesthetic of a room. Whether you’re looking to introduce a pop of color, a new pattern, or simply refresh your decor for a different season, these budget-friendly pillow covers are a brilliant solution. They allow for creative experimentation without the commitment or cost of larger decor items, proving that stylish home updates don’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Exploring their seasonal collections online has become a delightful pastime, always discovering something new to inspire a subtle refresh around the house.
As the days grow longer and the weather consistently warms up, my focus has naturally begun to shift from indoor renovations to our outdoor space. Having successfully tackled the interior clutter, I’m now turning my attention to creating an inviting and flourishing exterior. I have to admit, when it comes to anything remotely gardening-related, I am a complete novice. My past attempts at cultivating a vibrant garden have often resulted in less-than-thriving plant life, a testament to my lack of green thumb and foundational knowledge. Realizing my limitations, I decided it was time to consult with a professional. There’s a wonderful local nursery here in Richmond called Sneed’s that offers gardening consultations for a very reasonable $25. This seemed like an incredibly smart investment, especially considering the money I’ve wasted on plants that simply haven’t survived in previous years. Their expertise felt like the perfect antidote to my gardening woes.

Walking into the consultation, I was feeling totally overwhelmed by the sheer number of plant choices and the daunting task of trying to figure out what would not only look right but also thrive in our specific climate and soil conditions. It was an enormous relief to sit down with an expert who patiently listened to my vague ideas and then, with impressive skill, sketched out some concrete designs and plant recommendations tailored specifically for our yard. The consultant provided invaluable insights into sun exposure, drainage, and even low-maintenance options that align with my beginner status. Having a professional guide me through the process has been incredibly empowering, turning what felt like an impossible project into an exciting endeavor. I’m now genuinely thrilled and eagerly looking forward to diving into some serious landscaping, transforming our outdoor area into a beautiful, functional extension of our home. This year, I’m confident our plants will flourish!

Amidst all these home improvement projects, I’ve also been making a concerted effort to carve out more time for reading lately, which has been a truly refreshing and grounding change of pace. There’s something incredibly restorative about disconnecting from screens and immersing myself in a good book. I recently finished “For The Love” by Jen Hatmaker, and it was absolutely awesome. This book isn’t a linear narrative but rather a wonderfully random and incredibly relatable collection of life advice, reflections, and humorous anecdotes. It pretty much covers everything from navigating the complexities of your expectations in life to practical insights on parenting with grace and humor. Even though I’m not currently in the thick of raising little ones, I found myself thoroughly enjoying and relating to the parenting sections, appreciating the universal wisdom embedded within them. Hatmaker’s candid, authentic voice makes it feel like you’re having a heart-to-heart with a wise and funny friend, leaving you feeling inspired, understood, and a little less alone in the journey of life.
In a somewhat related vein, I also skimmed through “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. I know the KonMari method tends to elicit strong feelings and passionate debates among people – it’s certainly not for everyone! – but I genuinely appreciate the general underlying idea and core philosophy behind it. While some aspects of the method can feel a little too “out there” or prescriptive for my personal style, the fundamental principle of having less stuff around is incredibly appealing and liberating. My biggest takeaway has been a renewed commitment to purging a lot of accumulated junk and, more importantly, shifting my mindset towards mindful consumption. I’ve been actively trying to focus on buying quality items that I genuinely love and that will stand the test of time, rather than settling for temporary fixes that I’ll have to replace constantly. I understand the irony that I literally just showed you all the wonderful new things I bought for my office and home! However, this intentionality is precisely the point: it’s not about never buying anything new, but about making conscious choices to invest in pieces that truly “spark joy,” are functional, and contribute positively to our living space, ensuring that every addition serves a purpose and is deeply cherished.
