A Delightful Saturday: Adventures in Richmond, From Panels to Pasta and Tacky Lights

While I might be a little behind in sharing the vibrant details of my past Saturday, as last week simply vanished in a flurry of activity, I truly believe it’s better late than never to recount such a memorable day. This particular Saturday was an absolute joy, brimming with fantastic Richmond adventures that were simply too good not to share. From inspiring early morning engagements to delicious dining and a wonderfully quirky evening event, every moment felt like a chapter in a well-loved story. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the culinary highlights and exciting experiences that made this day so special.

An Inspiring Start: Small Business Insights and Fresh Beginnings

My Saturday began with an unusually early start, driven by the exciting opportunity to speak on a panel at a small business conference right here in Richmond. This enriching event was skillfully organized and led by the incredibly dynamic Sharvette Mitchell. Sharvette and I first crossed paths a few years ago, sharing a stage at a similar event, so it was a genuine pleasure and a wonderful full-circle moment to reconnect and catch up again. These conferences are invaluable, offering a platform for sharing insights, learning from fellow entrepreneurs, and strengthening the local business community. The energy in the room was palpable, filled with ambition and collaborative spirit.

Before heading out to the conference, I made sure to fuel up, opting for a simple yet satisfying breakfast. Lately, my morning routine has shifted quite a bit, and I’ve found myself gravitating towards fresh fruit to kickstart the day. On this particular morning, a generous bowl of juicy blackberries was exactly what I needed. It’s interesting how our bodies and preferences evolve; I’m not entirely sure where my usual breakfast cravings for more elaborate meals have gone, but I’m simply embracing this phase and listening to what feels right. The light, refreshing nature of the berries provided a perfect, clean energy boost, preparing me mentally and physically for the engaging discussions ahead.

The conference itself was a truly rewarding experience. The atmosphere was incredibly supportive and collaborative, fostering a sense of community among local business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. I spent the morning engaged in lively discussions, sharing perspectives, and connecting with some truly remarkable women. It’s always inspiring to be surrounded by individuals who are passionate about their work and dedicated to making a positive impact. These interactions are not just about business; they’re about building relationships, exchanging encouragement, and learning from diverse journeys. The collective wisdom and shared ambition among these lovely ladies made the morning fly by, leaving me feeling energized and motivated.

Midday Delights: Family Connections and a Feast of Leftovers from The Mill at MacArthur

After such an inspiring and invigorating morning, my next stop was a quick but heartfelt visit to my grandma’s place to say hello. These brief moments of connection with family are always grounding, a sweet pause amidst a busy schedule. Her warm smile and a quick chat always recharge my spirit. From there, I headed straight home, absolutely ravenous and eagerly anticipating lunch. The morning’s activities, coupled with my light fruit breakfast, had definitely worked up an appetite, and I was beyond thrilled to remember the delicious treasures waiting in the fridge: a generous portion of leftovers from the night before!

My boyfriend, Alex, and I had enjoyed a fantastic dinner at The Mill at MacArthur on Friday evening. This charming spot in Richmond had been on our list to try for a while, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed Friday night meal. I remember distinctly ordering a truly massive plate of pasta – a glorious “mountain” that, despite my best efforts and considerable hunger, I simply couldn’t finish. Knowing I had those delectable leftovers waiting made coming home even more appealing. There’s something uniquely satisfying about a well-planned leftover meal, turning yesterday’s indulgence into today’s convenient comfort.

A notable highlight of The Mill at MacArthur, and a significant reason we were so keen to visit, is their extensive and imaginative selection of vegetarian options. As someone who appreciates diverse plant-based dishes, it’s always a delight to find a restaurant that goes beyond the usual single-vegetarian-option approach. Their menu truly showcases creativity in vegetarian cuisine, offering a wide array of flavorful choices that appeal to all palates. Beyond the food, the service we received was absolutely fantastic – attentive, friendly, and genuinely welcoming without being intrusive. Every staff member seemed dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. Our initial visit left such a positive impression that we’re both incredibly excited and already planning our next trip back to explore more of their menu and soak in the wonderful ambiance.

An Evening of Festivity: Tacky Lights and Mediterranean Comfort

With my energy levels restored after lunch, I tackled a few lingering Christmas errands. The holiday season always brings a delightful mix of festive cheer and a dash of last-minute tasks, but getting them done cleared the slate for the evening’s main event. As daylight began to fade, I bundled up, layering against the crisp evening air, in preparation for a truly unique Richmond tradition: the Tacky Light Race. This event isn’t just a race; it’s a moving spectacle, a vibrant celebration of community spirit and festive eccentricity. The anticipation of seeing thousands of twinkling, often wonderfully over-the-top, holiday lights adorned on homes across the city always adds an extra spark to the holiday season.

I pretty much documented the entire Tacky Light Race on Snapchat, so if you happen to follow me there (my username is HeartVegetables), you likely caught a glimpse of just how incredibly fun and visually stimulating the experience was! The race route winds through some of Richmond’s most festively decorated neighborhoods, where residents pull out all the stops with their elaborate and, yes, wonderfully “tacky” light displays. The sheer volume and creativity of the lights created a continuous stream of visual distraction, making the miles melt away surprisingly fast. It was less about the pace and more about soaking in the joyous atmosphere, the cheering crowds, and the twinkling wonderland around every corner. Running (or briskly walking, as the case may be!) through such a vibrant display truly felt like being part of a moving art installation, a unique blend of fitness and festive cheer.

After the race, my friend Carin and I were definitely ready to warm up and refuel. Our destination of choice was Zoe’s Kitchen, a reliable favorite for fresh, flavorful, and comforting meals. I was still feeling quite chilled from the cool evening air during the race, so I knew immediately that a hearty, warm soup was in order. Alongside that, I absolutely couldn’t pass up their incredible basil pesto hummus – it’s a constant craving! In fact, it’s so good that I even developed my own basil pesto hummus copycat recipe if you’re ever inspired to whip up a batch at home. It’s no secret, and if you haven’t already gathered, I truly love Zoe’s Kitchen for its fresh ingredients, Mediterranean-inspired menu, and the consistently delicious options it offers. It was the perfect cozy end to a brisk and active evening.

A Luxurious Unwind: Bathroom Refresh and Day’s End Reflections

Finally, upon arriving home, the first order of business was to indulge in a truly well-deserved, nice hot bath. There’s nothing quite like the soothing warmth of bathwater to melt away the lingering chill of an outdoor race and the accumulated busyness of a packed day. The experience felt particularly luxurious because we recently completed a significant renovation of our bathroom. The transformation has made our bathroom a serene sanctuary, and moments like these, post-adventure, truly highlight the comfort and tranquility it now offers. It’s no wonder so many of you have expressed interest and asked for “after” photos of the bathroom renovation!

I’m delighted to finally share a glimpse of our refreshed space. Here’s a shot showcasing some of the key elements: the sleek new tub, the timeless elegance of subway tile adorning the walls, and a peek at the new flooring. We put a lot of thought into selecting materials that combine modern aesthetics with practical functionality, aiming for a clean, spa-like feel. As you can tell from the photo, we’re not entirely finished with the floor – there’s still a small detail of needing to create and install a threshold to complete the look. Home renovations are always a journey, often with little finishing touches that take time, but we’re so pleased with the progress and the refreshed ambiance it brings to our daily routine. This new space made that post-race bath feel even more like a lavish treat.

And with that blissful, warm soak, my wonderfully eventful Saturday finally came to a relaxing close. It was, without a doubt, a truly delicious day in every sense of the word – filled with enriching experiences, delightful meals, vibrant community spirit, and the comforting satisfaction of home. From the early morning buzz of a small business conference to the festive glow of the Tacky Light Race and the serene comfort of our newly renovated bathroom, each moment contributed to a deeply fulfilling and memorable day. Days like these are a testament to the richness found in balancing productivity with leisure, and in savoring both the planned adventures and the simple pleasures. I’m already looking forward to what Richmond has in store next!
