From House to Home Our First Year

This past weekend marked a significant milestone for us: our one-year anniversary in our charming 1923 home! While the house itself boasts nearly a century of history, our journey with it has just completed its first exciting chapter. It feels like only yesterday we were moving in, brimming with both anticipation and a healthy dose of apprehension. Where did the time go? To commemorate this special occasion, we decided to take a reflective look back at the incredible transformation our historic house has undergone so far. Owning a vintage home comes with an undeniable allure – the unique character, the intricate details, the stories embedded in its very bones. Yet, as any old house owner will attest, with great charm often comes a unique set of challenges. Our particular gem certainly needed more than just a fresh coat of paint; it required a thoughtful, strategic facelift, addressing everything from the purely aesthetic to the absolutely essential, such as replacing outdated plumbing and installing a much-needed dryer vent. This first year has been a whirlwind of discovery, hard work, and immense satisfaction.

Through this immersive experience of home renovation, we’ve distilled three crucial lessons that every DIY enthusiast or old house owner should keep in mind:

  1. Every single home improvement project, no matter how small or straightforward it appears, will invariably take at least three times longer than you initially estimate. Patience, therefore, isn’t just a virtue; it’s an absolute necessity.
  2. When collaborating on design and decor decisions, bombarding your partner with 1,497 Pinterest pins of things you adore will likely lead to overwhelming confusion rather than clear consensus. Selective curation and focused communication are key.
  3. Marrying an engineer proves to be an exceptionally good idea when undertaking extensive home renovations. Their problem-solving skills and practical approach are invaluable. Furthermore, having a father who is also an engineer and possesses an impressive collection of tools is an added, truly indispensable bonus. (And perhaps the best overall strategy? Ensuring said husband and father get along exceptionally well and enjoy working together!)

Now, let’s dive into the most exciting part: the before & after photos of our home’s incredible metamorphosis! We’re certainly not finished with our vision for this house – a historic home transformation is an ongoing journey – but it’s incredibly rewarding to pause and appreciate the significant progress we’ve achieved. Most of these “before” photographs were captured during the initial home inspection, so please excuse the less-than-perfect quality; their purpose is simply to illustrate the starting point of our journey and the exciting potential we saw in this vintage property.

Our Home’s Transformation: A Room-by-Room Tour of Our First Year

The Living Room: From Dated to Delightful

This is how the living room greeted us when we first toured the house. It was undeniably spacious, but its tired, beige palette and somewhat neglected fireplace certainly hinted at a need for attention. Did someone say “untapped potential”? Indeed! We envisioned a bright, inviting space that would honor the home’s historic roots while embracing a fresh, modern sensibility. The bones were good, but the soul needed a vibrant refresh.

And here is our living room today! The single most impactful aspect of this room’s transformation was undoubtedly painting the fireplace. What was once a dark, heavy focal point now brightens the entire space, creating a crisp, clean aesthetic. We opted for a neutral, calming wall color to complement the renovated fireplace, allowing the room’s architectural details to shine. Another recent addition that has dramatically enhanced the room’s comfort and style is our new rug. It’s incredibly fluffy and soft underfoot, instantly elevating the cozy factor and making the entire living area feel more welcoming and complete. This room now truly embodies the inviting atmosphere we dreamed of, perfect for relaxation and gathering with loved ones.

The Dining Room: A Space for Gatherings

One of the features that immediately captivated us about this dining room was its seamless, open connection to the kitchen. This layout promised excellent flow for entertaining and everyday living. However, in its original state, the room felt rather uninspired and somewhat bland when we first took ownership of the house. The walls were plain, and while functional, it lacked the character and warmth we desired for a central family space.

Fortunately, the generous dimensions of the space proved perfect for accommodating a substantial dining room table, making it ideal for family meals and larger gatherings. We even managed to comfortably place a piano in the room, adding a touch of elegance and musicality. To introduce architectural interest and a classic feel, we installed wainscoting on the bottom half of the walls. This detail instantly elevated the room’s sophistication. For the top half, we selected “Gray Matter” (Sherwin Williams), a sophisticated and versatile hue that provides a perfect backdrop for artwork and complements the white wainscoting beautifully. The combination has transformed the dining room into an elegant and inviting area, truly living up to its potential as a hub for both daily life and special occasions.

The Bathroom: A Refreshing Oasis

Upon inspection, this bathroom was, for lack of a better word, “fine.” The fixtures were relatively updated and functional, indicating some prior attention. However, it distinctly lacked personality and that spark of design that makes a space truly special. It was a utilitarian room that simply existed, rather than inviting a sense of calm or refreshment. We knew with a few thoughtful updates, it could become a tranquil and more aesthetically pleasing space.

Our primary goals for this bathroom renovation were to enhance both its functionality and its aesthetic appeal. To address the need for more storage in a compact space, we strategically added a medicine cabinet, which seamlessly blends into the design while providing essential storage. For the walls, we embraced a bolder choice with “Tranquil Aqua” (Sherwin Williams), a color I absolutely adore. While it’s darker than I might typically select for a smaller room, the abundant white tile throughout the bathroom creates a stunning contrast, preventing the space from feeling enclosed. In fact, I believe the depth of the aqua truly makes the white elements pop, lending a spa-like serenity. A major project that yielded fantastic results was using Grout Renew on the floor. While this was a considerably time-consuming task, the transformation was remarkable. It meticulously restored the floor, making it look absolutely fantastic and adding a polished finish to our refreshed bathroom. This truly showcases how small details can make a huge impact in a home renovation project.

The Master Bedroom: A Serene Sanctuary

When we first stepped into the upstairs, a unifying theme quickly became apparent: every single room, including this bedroom, was painted in the same buttery yellow hue. While not overtly offensive, it certainly wasn’t the serene, contemporary aesthetic we envisioned for our private retreat. The color felt somewhat dated and heavy, lacking the light and airy quality we desired for a space dedicated to rest and rejuvenation. Our goal was to create a truly tranquil sanctuary, a stark contrast to the existing buttery tones.

For our master bedroom, we opted for “Grey Clouds” (Sherwin Williams), a wonderfully subtle and sophisticated grey that has completely transformed the ambiance. I absolutely adore how light and airy this room now feels; it’s a calm, welcoming haven. The soft grey provides a perfect neutral backdrop, allowing for versatility in decor and creating a sense of spaciousness. With the paint refresh complete, our next priorities on the home renovation list include finding the perfect headboard to anchor the bed and selecting some captivating artwork or decorative elements for the walls. These finishing touches will truly complete our vision for a serene and stylish master suite, reflecting our personal aesthetic within the historic charm of our house.

Outdoor Living: Our Deck’s Dramatic Makeover

Earlier this year, we embarked on a much-needed project for our outdoor space: rejuvenating the deck. This “before” photo captures the deck right after a thorough power washing, a crucial first step that, surprisingly, made a pretty significant difference on its own. The power washing stripped away years of grime, revealing the underlying wood and preparing it for the next stage of its transformation. However, it was clear that a deeper, more lasting treatment was required to truly revitalize this essential outdoor living area.

Without a doubt, staining the deck was one of the most satisfying home renovation projects we’ve undertaken. We opted for a solid stain, which provided exceptional coverage and dramatically altered its appearance. The transformation was truly remarkable – what was once weathered and dull now looks fresh, inviting, and substantially more durable. This simple act elevated the entire exterior aesthetic of our home. To complete our outdoor oasis on a budget, we snagged some fantastic patio furniture from Craig’s List, proving that great style doesn’t always require a hefty price tag. We’ve since thoroughly enjoyed countless meals outside, taking full advantage of our newly revitalized space. This deck makeover has not only improved our home’s curb appeal but has also significantly enhanced our quality of life, offering a perfect spot for relaxation and entertaining.

The Road Ahead: Ongoing Projects and Future Dreams

As you can see, our first year in this 1923 historic house has been incredibly productive, but the journey of home renovation is far from over. There is still so much to do, particularly when you consider the untouched basement, which holds immense potential for future development. We also have plans for additional landscaping, updating certain fixtures, and perhaps even tackling some of the other upstairs rooms. The beauty of an old home is that it constantly offers new opportunities for improvement and personalization. It’s a continuous labor of love, requiring ongoing attention and creative vision.

Embracing the Journey: More Than Just a House

Looking back at the progress we’ve made fills us with immense pride and satisfaction. This house has certainly demanded a significant amount of work, effort, and dedication. However, witnessing its transformation from a dated structure into a vibrant, welcoming home has been an exciting and incredibly rewarding whirlwind. Each painted wall, every replaced pipe, and every carefully chosen piece of decor contributes to the story of our home. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a space that truly reflects who we are and where we feel comfortable, safe, and happy. This first year has taught us invaluable lessons about patience, perseverance, and the sheer joy of building a home, brick by brick, memory by memory.
