Cottage Cheese and Pesto Pizza Recipe for Creamy, Savory Flavor

This high-protein cottage cheese pesto pizza is perfect when you want pizza but prefer a healthier option. The secret: blend cottage cheese, spinach, and pesto into a creamy, flavorful sauce.

pesto cottage cheese pizza

I love using cottage cheese in unexpected ways — it becomes silky when blended and adds protein to dishes without overpowering their flavor. In this recipe, cottage cheese forms the base of a pesto sauce enhanced with fresh spinach for extra nutrition. It’s based on my simple pesto dip but transformed into a spread for flatbread-style pizza. The spinach blends in so smoothly no one will notice it’s there, and the result is vibrant, creamy, and satisfying.

Flatbread and Crust Options

For convenience, I use store-bought flatbreads — Stonefire or similar varieties from Aldi work well. Keep them in the freezer so you always have one on hand. If you prefer homemade, try an easy flatbread dough or a simple two-ingredient pizza crust. To boost protein further, consider using a cottage cheese pizza crust made from leftover cottage cheese.

Prepared Pesto

The easiest way to make this pizza is to use a good-quality prepared pesto. A balanced, flavorful store-bought pesto keeps the recipe quick while delivering bright basil and nut notes that complement the cottage cheese base. If you prefer, homemade walnut or basil pesto works beautifully as well.

How to Blend the Cottage Cheese

Blend the cottage cheese until completely smooth to avoid any grainy texture in the sauce. A mini food processor, standard food processor, or immersion blender will do the job. If using a large blender or processor, blend a larger amount of cottage cheese first and reserve the remainder for another use—pizza crust, pasta sauce, or savory pancakes all benefit from blended cottage cheese.

Serving Suggestions

Pair this flatbread pizza with a crisp salad or simply roast some vegetables. An Italian chopped salad, air-fryer broccoli, or oven-baked green bean fries all complement the flavors while keeping the meal light and veggie-forward.

Description

This high-protein cottage cheese pesto pizza is perfect when you want pizza but prefer a healthier option. The secret: blend cottage cheese, spinach, and pesto into a creamy, flavorful sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cottage cheese (I recommend 4% milkfat)
  • 1/4 cup pesto
  • 1/4 cup fresh spinach
  • 3 oz fresh mozzarella or 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 1 flatbread (about 5″ x 10″) or use a cottage cheese pizza crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Combine cottage cheese and fresh spinach in a blender or food processor and blend until very smooth.
  3. Add the pesto and blend again until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
  4. Spread the pesto-cottage cheese sauce over the flatbread, leaving a small border around the edges. Top with slices or shredded mozzarella.
  5. Place the flatbread on a baking sheet and bake 12–15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
