There are weeks that simply whisk by, leaving you wondering where the days went. Was it the allure of a shorter work week that made time accelerate? Or perhaps it’s the quintessential summer phenomenon, where sun-drenched days and long evenings blur into a delightful, yet fleeting, memory? Whatever the reason, this past week felt like a whirlwind, but I managed to pause long enough to capture yesterday’s meals, preserving the beloved tradition of What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW). It’s more than just sharing food; it’s a mindful reflection on nourishment, energy, and the rhythm of daily life.
For me, WIAW isn’t just a trend; it’s a valuable practice that encourages me to be more conscious about my food choices throughout the day. It’s a snapshot of real-life eating, demonstrating that even amidst busy schedules, it’s entirely possible to fuel your body with delicious and wholesome options. Join me as I walk you through a typical (yet unexpectedly significant) Wednesday, filled with satisfying meals, a much-needed coffee break, and some truly exciting personal news.

Energizing the Morning: A Quick & Nutritious Start
My day kicked off with a commitment that required an earlier-than-usual departure. Alex and I had arranged to meet with a couple of our church pastors for coffee, which meant breakfast needed to be swift, efficient, and packed with sustained energy. The solution? A super simple, yet incredibly effective, protein shake. This particular morning, the thought of artfully arranging beautiful toppings, while appealing, was simply out of the question. The priority was getting essential nutrients in quickly.
Protein shakes are a true lifesaver for busy mornings. They provide a fantastic dose of protein, which is crucial for satiety and muscle health, especially when you’re on the go. My go-to recipe is usually a blend of a high-quality protein powder – often a whey or plant-based option – with a banana for natural sweetness and carbohydrates, and a splash of almond milk or water for consistency. It’s a complete meal in a glass, ensuring I’m fueled and ready to tackle the day’s tasks without feeling sluggish. On days like yesterday, when every minute counts, having a ready-to-blend option means I never have to compromise on a nutritious start. It’s a testament to how small, smart choices can make a big difference in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, even when time is a luxury.
A Curated Coffee Experience at Sugar & Twine
Our destination for coffee was Sugar & Twine, a charming little coffee shop nestled in the vibrant Carytown district. Though I’ve only visited a handful of times, it has quickly become a favorite for its distinct atmosphere. The moment you step inside, you feel a sense of curated comfort; every detail, from the minimalist decor to the carefully selected pastries, contributes to a warm and inviting ambiance. It’s the kind of place where you want to linger, savoring not just your drink, but the quiet hum of conversation and the subtle artistic touches around you.
What truly sets Sugar & Twine apart, for me, are their unique mugs. Each one feels like a small piece of art, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the coffee-drinking experience. It’s a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the care and thought put into the establishment. Sipping a huge mug of freshly brewed coffee in such a thoughtfully designed space was the perfect way to begin the day, especially when engaging in meaningful conversation with friends. It served as a wonderful reminder that sometimes, the simple act of sharing a cup of coffee can be incredibly enriching, fostering connection and setting a positive tone for the hours ahead.

Smart Snacking: Keeping Hunger at Bay
Given my early breakfast, it wasn’t surprising when my stomach started rumbling around 10:30 AM. This is a common occurrence when you kickstart your metabolism early, and it’s precisely why having healthy snacks on hand is so crucial. Luckily, I had a secret weapon stashed away in my desk drawer: a bag of delicious cashews. These weren’t just any cashews; I had picked them up on a whim at Target, and they turned out to be exceptionally good – almost *too* good!
Cashews are a fantastic choice for a mid-morning snack, offering a wonderful blend of healthy fats, protein, and fiber that helps keep you feeling full and satisfied. They provide a steady release of energy, preventing the dreaded blood sugar crash that often follows less nutritious snack choices. However, their deliciousness also comes with a caveat: portion control can be a challenge! I’ve learned from experience that if a bag of irresistible nuts is within my line of sight, I’ll invariably keep reaching for more. So, after grabbing a generous handful to tide me over, I wisely zipped up the bag and tucked it out of view. It’s a simple trick, but an effective one, for mindful eating and ensuring those healthy snacks actually contribute to your well-being without leading to accidental overconsumption.
Lunchtime Delight: The Incredible Cafeteria Salad Bar
As noon approached, it was time to head down to the cafeteria for lunch. I’ve often sung praises about our office salad bar, and for good reason – it truly is incredible. In an age where healthy eating can sometimes feel expensive or inaccessible, having such a robust and affordable option right at work is a blessing. It allows me to build a meal that is both satisfying and packed with nutrients, tailored exactly to my preferences.
My strategy for building the perfect salad involves a base of mixed greens, a hearty protein source like grilled chicken or chickpeas, and then a generous selection of colorful vegetables. Think crunchy bell peppers, sweet cherry tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, shredded carrots, and perhaps some pickled onions for a tangy kick. I’ll add some healthy fats with avocado or a sprinkle of seeds, and finish with a light, vinaigrette-style dressing. The result is a truly massive salad, overflowing with flavor and texture. What makes it even more remarkable is the price point: this enormous, nutrient-dense meal cost me only $4. That’s an astonishing value, especially when you consider it’s about *half* the price you’d pay for a comparable salad at a gourmet grocery store like Whole Foods. This not only makes healthy eating convenient but also incredibly economical, proving that you don’t have to break the bank to fuel your body with wholesome, fresh ingredients. The salad was genuinely satisfying, keeping me full and energized well into the afternoon.
Afternoon Refuel: A Mini Larabar to the Rescue
After a substantial and fulfilling lunch, I found myself comfortably satiated for several hours. However, as the clock edged closer to 4:00 PM, a subtle hint of hunger began to creep in. This is that crucial period in the afternoon where energy can dip, and the temptation to reach for less-than-ideal snacks becomes strong. To prevent this, and to ensure I wasn’t ravenous by the time dinner rolled around, I turned to another smart snack I keep on hand: a mini Larabar.
These mini Larabars are absolute gems. They’re perfectly portioned at just 100 calories each, making them an ideal choice for a small, mindful snack. What I love most about Larabars is their simplicity and commitment to whole ingredients. Typically made from just a few components like dates, nuts, and fruit, they offer natural sweetness and sustained energy without any artificial additives or unnecessary fillers. The taste is consistently amazing, satisfying my sweet tooth while providing a nutritious boost. It’s the perfect little something to hold me over, bridging the gap between a late lunch and an evening meal, and ensuring I arrive at dinner feeling comfortably hungry, rather than famished and prone to overeating.
Dinner on the Double: Creamy Tomato Soup & Exciting News!
Once Alex and I got home, the evening hustle began. With Alex having a softball game, dinner needed to be on the table quickly. Thankfully, I had a tried-and-true recipe up my sleeve that’s both delicious and remarkably fast to prepare: Jenn’s Creamy Tomato Soup with Baked Mozzarella Balls. I managed to whip it up in about 20 minutes, a true testament to its weeknight-friendly nature. This soup is one of our absolute favorite meals, a comforting classic that brings warmth and flavor to any evening. I know what you might be thinking – summer isn’t exactly “soup weather.” And while that’s generally true, this particular soup is so incredibly good, so rich and satisfying, that I honestly don’t even care about the season. It’s an indulgence worth making year-round.

A quick confession about the photo: I took it before we added the delicious mozzarella balls on top. The truth is, I *might* have burned them a tiny bit, and while they tasted fantastic (crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside!), they weren’t quite picture-perfect. But that’s the beauty of home cooking, isn’t it? Sometimes things don’t turn out exactly as planned visually, but the flavor and the effort always shine through. This quick, hearty meal was the perfect end to a busy day, fueling Alex for his game and providing a comforting close to my What I Ate Wednesday. It was a normal day of eating, yet it carried an underlying current of immense excitement.
A Life-Changing Announcement: Family Reunites in Richmond!
While the meals of the day might sound like a perfectly typical Wednesday, there was an extraordinary, life-altering development unfolding behind the scenes! I’ve been holding onto this news, hesitant to share it prematurely in case plans shifted, but I can finally announce it: my parents have officially moved to Richmond! The joy and relief I feel are truly immeasurable.
This heartwarming family photo was taken almost exactly a year ago at our family reunion. Now, the days of driving 8 hours to be together are a thing of the past!
Yesterday was a monumental day for them, spent driving a gigantic moving truck all the way from Columbus to Richmond. Today, they’re knee-deep in unpacking, transforming their new house into a home. Having my parents close by is something I’ve dreamt of for years. The thought of spontaneous visits, shared meals, and their consistent support just a short drive away fills my heart with an overwhelming sense of happiness and gratitude. For so long, family gatherings involved extensive travel, often an eight-hour drive, making frequent visits challenging. Now, those long journeys are a thing of the past.
It’s quite serendipitous how our family has slowly converged in this wonderful city. My brother made the move to Richmond first, and I followed a year later, drawn by the city’s charm and the prospect of being closer to him. Now, six years after my own move, my parents have completed the family migration, making Richmond our true family hub. The thought of building new memories, celebrating holidays, and simply experiencing daily life with them so near is incredibly exciting. This move represents not just a change of address, but a profound deepening of our family connection, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about this new chapter!
Do you live near any of your family members?
I’m so eager to hear about your experiences! Do you have the pleasure of living close to your family, or do you navigate long distances for your reunions? What are your favorite ways to stay connected? And on a related note, what are your go-to quick meal ideas for busy weeknights? I’m always looking for inspiration!
As always, I’m delighted to be linking up with Laura for the wonderful What I Ate Wednesday community!
