2113 Restaurant: An RVA Review

An Evening at 2113: A Culinary Journey Through Shockoe Bottom’s “Sampling Shockoe” Event

Richmond’s vibrant culinary scene regularly offers unique opportunities for food enthusiasts to explore local flavors, and a few weeks ago, the “Sampling Shockoe” event was in full swing, drawing eager diners to the historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood. This much-anticipated culinary showcase allowed participating restaurants to present a specially curated 3-course menu for a set price of $30, inviting guests to savor their signature dishes without breaking the bank. My friends and I, always on the lookout for new dining experiences, decided this was the perfect occasion to finally visit 2113, a restaurant we had heard much about but had yet to try. Our curiosity was piqued, despite encountering a few lackluster reviews on platforms like UrbanSpoon; we believed in giving every establishment a fair chance to impress.

Locating 2113 proved to be a bit of an adventure, as its exterior signage was rather understated, blending subtly with the surrounding architecture of Shockoe Bottom. However, the moment we stepped inside, we were immediately enveloped by an atmosphere that exuded modern elegance and sophisticated charm. The interior design struck a perfect balance between contemporary trendiness and inviting comfort, making it clear why the place generated so much buzz. The staff was incredibly welcoming and accommodating, readily granting our request to be seated on their delightful patio. Dining al fresco added another layer to our experience, offering a relaxed ambiance under the evening sky, perfect for catching up with friends while enjoying the energy of the bustling neighborhood.

Perusing the special “Sampling Shockoe” menu, I found myself contemplating the 3-course offering. While it presented an attractive value, I wasn’t feeling particularly hungry for an extensive meal, and upon closer inspection, the price difference from ordering a single entree à la carte wasn’t substantial enough to sway my decision. Ultimately, I opted for a single main course, a dish I often gravitate towards in Italian-inspired settings: the Gnocchi. Its promise of delicate potato dumplings, usually bathed in a rich, flavorful sauce, always holds a special appeal.

Meanwhile, many of my friends embraced the full 3-course experience, starting with appetizers. Among the selections, one dish unequivocally stole the show: the Macaroni and Cheese. Its arrival at the table elicited immediate gasps of admiration, a visual masterpiece promising indulgent comfort. Though it contained meat, preventing me from tasting it, every single friend who tried it raved about its creamy texture, rich flavor, and satisfying heartiness. It was, by all accounts, an absolute triumph and a clear crowd-pleaser among our group. Its popularity was undeniable, setting a high bar for the courses to follow.

The highly praised Macaroni and Cheese appetizer.

Beyond the Macaroni and Cheese, a couple of my friends chose the delicate Squash Blossoms. These seasonal delights, often lightly fried or stuffed, are a testament to culinary artistry and careful preparation. While I didn’t try them myself, I was told they were “pretty good,” a solid choice that offered a lighter, more refined start to the meal compared to the decadent mac and cheese.

To complement their meals, several bottles of wine were ordered and shared among my companions. Although I abstained, choosing instead to focus on the food and conversation, I observed that everyone at the table genuinely enjoyed their selections, adding to the convivial spirit of our gathering. A good wine pairing can significantly elevate a dining experience, and it seemed to do just that for my friends.

The Main Course: A Tale of Expectations and Realities

As our main courses arrived, a slight sense of disappointment washed over me as I observed the portion size of my gnocchi. It was undeniably a very small serving, especially for a single entree. This made me briefly reconsider my decision to forgo the 3-course meal; perhaps the full spread would have offered a more satisfying quantity. Despite the initial visual letdown, my inherent love for gnocchi kept my excitement alive. The menu had described a ricotta-tarragon sauce, a combination that promised creamy richness with a subtle herbaceous note. However, upon closer inspection, the gnocchi appeared to be somewhat adrift in what seemed to be predominantly oil, rather than a well-emulsified, flavorful sauce.

My gnocchi, a visually promising but ultimately disappointing main.

Upon tasting, my initial visual assessment unfortunately held true. The texture of the gnocchi itself was commendable – tender and yielding, indicative of proper preparation. However, the sauce was indeed a significant letdown, lacking the promised complexity and tasting predominantly of oil. The delicate ricotta-tarragon notes I had anticipated were conspicuously absent, leaving the dish feeling rather one-dimensional and uninspired. Adding another layer of complexity, the gnocchi was topped with an “interesting” mushroom mixture. As someone who isn’t a big fan of mushrooms, this inclusion didn’t do much to elevate my enjoyment of the dish; in fact, it further detracted from what I hoped would be a comforting and flavorful experience. It was a dish that had potential but missed the mark on execution, particularly concerning its key flavoring component.

Beyond my gnocchi, my friends’ main courses offered a mixed bag of experiences. Stephanie and Jamie both opted for the Surf & Turf, a classic combination of land and sea. They both agreed that the “surf” component, likely a seafood offering, was quite good, demonstrating skillful preparation. However, the “turf” portion, usually beef, failed to impress, falling short of their expectations. Rachel, meanwhile, chose the beef entree, which she seemed to enjoy without significant complaint, suggesting that perhaps the specific preparation of the “turf” in the Surf & Turf was the issue. The remaining members of our group, following my lead, also chose the gnocchi, and their reactions mirrored my own, reinforcing the sentiment that this particular dish was not 2113’s strongest offering.

Service and Overall Impression: A Balanced Perspective

As our meal concluded, it became evident to the staff that we weren’t entirely thrilled with the food. Our unfinished plates, clearly not a result of generous portion sizes, likely signaled our less-than-enthusiastic dining experience. What truly stood out, however, was the restaurant’s exceptional commitment to customer feedback. The staff, from our server to multiple other members of the team, were genuinely super nice and proactively approached our table, asking for our honest impressions. We, in turn, politely but candidly shared our thoughts, particularly regarding the gnocchi and the surf & turf. This level of attentiveness and willingness to engage with diners, even when the feedback might be critical, speaks volumes about their dedication to service and continuous improvement.

Reflecting on the entire evening, the experience was a little disappointing purely from a culinary standpoint. While I truly wanted to love the food at 2113, it sadly fell short of expectations on several key dishes, making it difficult for me to wholeheartedly recommend it as a primary dining destination for an outstanding meal. However, the overall atmosphere was undeniably awesome – trendy, sophisticated, and perfectly suited for a lively evening out. Moreover, the people working there were simply super nice, professional, and genuinely attentive. Their sweet disposition and proactive approach to gathering feedback were truly appreciated and left a strong positive impression. Therefore, while 2113 might not be my top choice for a memorable gourmet meal, I firmly believe that if you’re looking for a chic and vibrant place to grab a drink with friends, enjoy the fantastic ambiance, and experience top-notch service in Shockoe Bottom, it would be absolutely great!
